My favorite resource for learning to design my own wholecloth quilt is Lisa Calle's DVD "Mastering The Mini - Wholecloth That Is". She walks you through several stages of designing, then quilting, your own wholecloth.
And just as a comment, a wholecloth doesn't just have to be hand quilted. I did mine on my longarm.
