The website has a list of dealers. I don't think they're at big box stores.
My clothes are very clean in my soft water, with very little soap. Not very little water, though. It depends on what you want and your world view.
For quilts, I think a mechanically-controlled, older machine that allows you to bypass the agitation is kindest.

That is the brand my repairman has recommended when I need to replace my old 20+ yr old Maytag. Home model front loaders would never get DH work clothes clean and take way to long to wash a load. I do take quilts to the laundromat for washing so I can use a front loader that lifts and drops rather than the twist and pull of a top loader. Appreciate all these comments so when the day comes, I know what questions to ask.

This thread reminds me of what an older quilty friend said when I first started quilting. "We wash things to death." I was a little horrified at the thought, but it makes sense. Our clean obsession just shreds quilts. She mentioned that quilts were seldom washed in the hand pieced days. They may be beaten on a line but not actually washed where they would have to dry on a line. Without a dryer, the cotton inside and out might mildew. Which is why some old quilts still have the paper intact inside them. Thanks for the idea of delicate and no spin.

it is probably all good advice, but giving instructions for out of the ordinary washing materials and the lay it flat, and ever so gentle rocking in a bath tub and no spin cycle, and color catchers, to me, cancel out the idea of a quilt for a gift, made with love. Tell them to use it with abandon, and joy, and warmth, wash and wear, and when it wears out I'll make another one.
