Why is it called a "quilting bee"?

QUILTING BEES BUZZ
Of all the good stories my grandmother told, I like the one best about quilters of old.
When stitching a quilt for a social or bride, their joys, their hopes, and their fears they'd confide.
They talked much like we do when we get together: new recipes, patterns, the flu and the weather.
The needles moved fast with a deadline to race. Their chatter went faster to keep up the pace.
A man who came in said, "Hear that? Sakes alive! Those quilting folks sound just like bees in a hive."
From that time to this, Quilting Bee is the name for groups when they gather around a quilt frame.
My grandmother's story makes good sense to me, for quilting bees buzz as sure as can be.
...Found in a book on Quilting Poems, by Bee Neeley Kuckelman.

I like that...I miss a good quilting bee....around here they are all Mennonite ladies, and so old they move too slow for me...I finally quit going when it appeared all they were doing was talking and threading needles for ME to quilt with...
