Why didn't I know about this and why is it so hard to find?

Yes, It can go on a plane. It has no blade. It is basically a plastic with ten different slots where you can stick a threaded needle. It spins to wrap the loose thread around. As said, I had one when I did cross stitch, but hated to get the needles out. It is only good for traveling so the threads don't tangle.

My friend likes to thread all her needles in the morning so she can enjoy a day of handquilting like this. I don't have one, but if I find my eyesight getting weaker I think it would be a smart idea. Have fun with it.

I have one of those for cross stitching. I need to give it to DD bc I can't see to cross stitch any more. When I hand quilt I thread all my needles at one time and leave them on the spool of thread. As I need them I already have one threaded.

I love mine as I mentioned before. I load up about a needle, stick it in, wind the thingy and there you go. I get about 10 needles in there. I know a guild member who sat on her pincushion and had to lie down in the back seat to get to the ER where she had to explain to about 10 people why she had at least one needle completely unexposed in you-know-where. I'd much rather sit on this thing.
