a scant 1//4" is one thread over from a regular 1/4". Doesn't seem worth the trouble, Just use a fine quilt thread

No matter which machine I use none of my blocks come out the right size using 1/4 inch settings. My Sapphire even has a 1/4 in setting but blocks come out to small.
This is not important for my projects but when in a group that makes blocks for projects they have to be the right size.
So I always move my needle to the 2.5 setting to get the right size blocks.

Ditto on the dislike of scant 1/4 " , need that added in cutting the pattern...

I know a quilter who ONLY does scant on all patterns. She owns her own LQS and when she teachers her classes.. thats how she teaches them also.

How do you measure a scant?? I'm new to quilting but I'm not even going to start "scant". If it calls for "scant", I'll do something else, it's not worth the trouble!!

Not all machines let you move the needle over. A Feather Weight for sure does not and many quilters use it. Then when you turn off a machine the lets you move the needle to the right it resets itself again.

Why have a 2nd one, when one will do the job?
In$tead you can $ave your $ for more fabric!

It is only an issue when you swap blocks. If I make it for myself I do try to use the same machine. Also most of those 1/4 in. feet are slightly off. I always make sure to tweek them when I put them on a machine and I keep them with that machine. I also agree that using a thinner thread made for quilting helps.

Thinner thread??????? the quilting thread, hand and machine that I've purchased is always heavier than normal sewing thread. I'd never want to use thin thread, fearing the seams would not hold.

I totally agree with you. I hate patterns that say scant 1/4". Unless it is a block exchange with others, I totally ignore the scant part. If you use your same machine on the entire quilt, it shouldn't be a problem to use the regular 1/4". I didn't think I could move my needle over either, but a friend with the same machine showed me how. Still "scant" is a naughty word to me.
