Why does everyone wash their quilt as soon as the last stitch is completed?

I have a quilt that I need to finish & need to double-check about the washing bit also.

First, I do not like that "crinkly" look. Second, I am very careful when handling my work. No food or drink in the area. No hand lotion! So my quilts are very clean when finished. Sooo, I do not wash them!! If and when I give them away they go with washing instructions.

I always wash mine to make sure nothing comes apart and to make sure it's clean. It also hides my novice FMQ. Sometimes I hang it on the clothes line on a windy day which prevents little wrinkling and makes it smell so fresh.

I don't! I am always afraid the colors are going to run, despite the fact that I have pre-washed the fabric and used color catchers. So I let the recipient do the first wash and bear any responsibility! Some people like the look and feel of a washed quilt, especially if they don't pre-wash their fabric.
