Why does everyone wash their quilt as soon as the last stitch is completed?

I wash mine because I have a cat and a dog. My cat thinks that he own everything including whatever I am working on.

This is REALLY a dumb question: HOW do you press a quilt after it is completed? Once I pressed the binding after it was done and it seems so flat after that. :oops:

If you use a 100% cotton batting, it won't melt (or go flat). Poly blends will still melt as do the 100% poly batts.

The one thing I always do is to use a color catcher when I wash them. I have never had a problem with bleeding, even on a red and white quilt.

Ontheriver is right on! I always worry that the quilt will come apart! I like the look of a quilt after being washed. It says "look at me"!

Ditto and like others said, a quilt gets dirty from handling and oils from hands, dust from sitting.

I don't necessarily wash mine--only if I think there's a reason to do so.

I feel like it's not done till it's washed cuz thats when it fluffs up and I can see what it looks like with the quilting :)

I agree with everyone on this, plus I wouldn't want the new owner to worry if they washed the quilt and "ruined" it!

I agree....I agree....wash before giving to make any 'discoveries' before givng....

Parts of my quilts have been on the floor as I quilt or sew on the binding so I want the quilt clean and smelling good. If need be I press it lightly( I use cotton batting for this reason). :lol: :D :-D :thumbup:
