When I started I used both lines on mat and ruler as a check on each other. Then I was told never to use the mat. I took no notice. I line fabric on a mat line then measure with ruler and check on mat. Find if measuring over 61/2" and WOF cut I do only use the mat , can't do with fiddling with two rulers.

I will use the mat to make sure the fabric is laid out "straight" but then use the ruler to actually measure. I will use the mat in conjunction, especially if I am doing a "rough" cut to be sure the cut is straight and I am not getting off course. I think the answer as in much of quilting, is DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!

The 3D vs 2D thing: I have very little depth perception and have found when I use my mat lines I am much more accurate. Also, my ruler lines seem so thick - have to pay a lot of attention to which side of the line I am using.

My original mat board from Olfa didn't have lines on it. I drew 2 lines on it with a permanent marker, one on each long side to lay the fold of my fabric on while straightening the edges. The lines on my new mat are fatter that the markings on my rulers so I guess I've always used my rulers because the lines are not as thick and to start with I didn't hav

Thank you I did not mean this to be negative. I also love Jenny. I do use the lines on my mat to square up or cut large pieces from yardage, but I don't use my mat to cut say a 2 1/2 inch square for that I use my ruler.

Martelli mats are the only mats that aren't supposed to shift and become inaccurate over time. However if you start a project by measuring with your mat, only use the mat. if you start using the ruler, only use the ruler. It may not be off by alot but it can be off and make it harder to put together.

I use the lines on the mat because as Sharon Schambler says, they don't move. Sometimes no matter how careful we are that ruler will mover ever so slightly and we get a crooked cut. By keeping everything lined up with the lines on the mat you can be assured your cut is straight, well unless your mat is twisted and warped.
