This is a great ship pattern using log cabin squares:

But I'm wondering why make log cabin squares out of all the same fabric (as the pattern suggests) instead of just cutting large squares of fabric in that color? Does it make a difference in how the quilt will look when finished?

I'm not sure either...I would think it would be extra fabric and time. You could acheive the same pattern by quilt lines instead of seam lines.

They're actually half log cabin blocks. With just squares you get straight edges. With the half log cabin blocks you get those nice stair step edges.

Didn't see any ships only flowers, ladybug, etc. They must have changed the pics.

Put ship in the keyword search box. I don't see why solid squares wouldn't for the solid whole log cabin blocks. There are 13 of those in the pattern.

If you look at some patterns, the quilt will look a little different when you use solid blocks versus pieced ones...The seams in the pieced blocks do add another element to the over all appearance.
