Why quilters like me should never buy kits!

Visited a LQS this week and overheard a clerk tell someone that they had tried out a pattern and found 3 mistakes in it and were glad they made it up before they cut the fabric for the kits. Thought that was an interesting perspective.
This was just after a group of us finished a quilt top for a local money generating project. The top came out 8" longer than the pattern had stated so the fabric we had purchased for the backing was too short. Makes one wonder, doesn't it?

I love the way your quilt turned out! I used to buy kits every now and then, but haven't for a while. I've only gotten two kits that gave me any trouble. One of them had plenty of fabric, but the instructions were so horrible that I don't think any one would be able to follow them, and the other one I had trouble with, I was shorted a couple of pieces of fabric. I ended up improvising on both--the one with the horrible instructions, I just made the quilt with a completely different pattern (actually two patterns combined!) and the other quilt I was able to purchase some fat quarters that coordinated well enough.
I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another kit, if it was something I really liked and the price was right.
Too bad you purchased it so far away from your home--you might have been able to take it back and have them give you the proper amount of fabric--but it serendipitously turned out beautiful anyway! :D

Your quilt is beautiful. I did the same thing a few years ago with the same results, not enough material in the kit. Unlike you I gave up. A couple days ago I found the "kit" with all it's cut pieces. I'm going to put this thing together if it kills me. Thank You for letting all of us know that even if the manufacturers mess up the kit a good quilter can make lemonade out of lemons.
