I'm preparing to hand quilt for the first time. I have my quilt sandwich already basted with safety pins and I was just reading that people use a 1/2 or 5/8 inch seam allowance when piecing the backing. I sewed mine with 1/4 inch seam allowances. The backing is 3 pieces...1 the width of fabric minus the salvages and the two outside pieces are 1/2 the width of fabric. Do you think I should go to the trouble of removing pins and resewing with larger seam allowances or will it be okay?

that is about what I use when I do mine in pieces. I always double sew my seams so that they hold up under a lot of washing.

Don't panic. Quilt your quilt. If you want to use wider seams, do it next time. It will be OK.

I always use quarter inch seams, but I machine quilt. I believe you will be OK.

I've always used the standard 1/4 inch and never a problem. I machine quilt and all my quilts are used and washed many times. I'd say keep on quilting.

I use a wider seam but that is because I tear my backings and tear off the selvedge edges and so I use a 1/2- 5/8" seam to make sure that the fabric threads are not pulled. It also easier to press open the back seam if it is wider than 1/4"

I'm glad you were advised it will be OK as it. It would awful to need to redo.

It will be fine - since you are quilting the piece it shouldn't be a problem.

i use 1/4" never had a problem. besides, i would never remember to change the foot to make a wider seams allowance!

I use 1/4 in seams in my backing all the time and hand quilt as well. Never had a problem. Don't fret and enjoy the quilting.
