Mine are 1/2" and I haven't noticed any smell.

I had an opportunity to try one, and am glad I did. I'd forgotten I don't care for the smell of wet wool.

I haven't noticed any smell from mine or being around the wool pads at workshops.

What everyone really needs is the fine mist sprayer sold at beauty supply stores or online. No more drops of water just a very fine mist. I put Best Press in one and water in another. The sprayer the hairdressers I asked said was the best is the Flairosol brand. Usually about $15.
