You can gain contrast by using different types patterns in the fabrics. Large scale vs small vs solid or near solid, traditional vs modern. Etc. Also, if the rest of the Colors are pastel you ought to be able to slip in a medium value green to create contrast. It doesn't have to be Kelly green, can be softer but still medium value. Just my 2 cents.

I actually like the pastels and neutrals. They remind me of very loved quilts that have been used for years. That said, there is no rule you have to make anything. It was your thought and they will not be expecting a quilt. If you just can't do it, don't.

I agree with alleyoop1's suggestion of buying something and then if you feel like you should make something--make
some pillow shams in those colors or throw pillows for the bed. Less expensive, less time and less fabric leftovers.

If you want to make them a quilt, the colors are not about you, but their likes. And you might find a quilt in shades of tans, greys, yellows and greens will be prettier than you thought. Life is all about learning and stretching the bar, and taste can change. I love colors, but also think these colors could make a beautiful quilt, you might be supprised how well you would like it. If nothing else, get some layer cakes and make a small sample, and then you could use it for a pillow sham or sofa pillow.

Sometimes pastels can make beautiful quilts. I do remember seeing a quilt by Alex Anderson, maybe it was on the cover of a book she wrote, but it can be done. Sometimes doing a quilt outside of our comfort zone can be a good thing.

Maybe you could find a nice floral print with the yellow and greens and sash and border it in the tans and gray. A Moda Marble would give the gray some texture. Or maybe you could find some interesting batiks.

I felt the exact same way until I took a class on Stars with Alex Anderson at Asilomar in California. She suggests doing one with neutrals and I started it there and eventually finished at home. I didn't like the idea, labored over it and then when finished find it is a favorite of mine and the most elegant I have made. Try it and you might feel the same. I learned a lot about showing contrast with the muted shades.
