I teach machine quilting at RMCC in Mena, Arkansas. I learned to FM on my old Viking when I took FM machine embroidery. I later traded up to a Bernina 1130. Great machine for FM quilting. Then I got a vintage Featherweight, and now I do most of my FM quilting on it. If you use a nice thin batting like Warm & Natural, you can machine quilt a queen/king on a FW.

I doesn't matter that much on which machine you learn; the techniques are the same, although you will find variables from machine to machine. I say take the class & rent a machine. You will be glad you did.

There is a huge difference in technique in using a non-stitch-regulated machine. If your own machine doesn't have the BSR, then don't learn on a machine with the BSR. Other than that, the techniques should carry over from one machine to another. Have lots of fun in the class.

Rent one!!! The hassle of taking the machine on the plane is reason enough! I wish I could go with you!

This is a very good point. Not having used a stitch regulator, I have now learned something!

I have the 830 to put on my Bernina quilt frame and use my 730 for everything else. I wish I had the opportunity for that class. I'd rent one in a minute but would ask my Bernina dealer which one he would recommend. I spend a lot of time at my Bernina dealer cause he is just a couple of
blocks away. I am still learning free motion and I will be
for awhile as it takes a lot of expermenting and practice.
Good luck and have fun doing it.

That is so cool! I wondered why I haven't heard of more people using a treadle sewing machine. It seems like it would be very controllable... maybe even good exercise if you went fast enough? ;-)

I remember riding back and forth on a treadle when I was little. :-D
I have seen a video of a very talented woman free motion stitching on a treadle. She made it look very easy! However, she was obviously way more coordinated than I am. Practice makes perfect, they say.

Jennifer, It looks as if you are a skydiver. My husband is passionate about skydiving. Is a rigger, first jump instructor, coach, and has a demo rating. where are you going for this FMQ class?

Love the birdsuit and would love to take a class in Denver. The quilt shop owner is always out of town in October though and she depends on me keep things rolling while she is away.

Do you do free-motion quilting on your Bernina?[/quote]

All the time, with and with out the stitch regulator. Stitch regulater for big stuff, without for the small stuff. It is more about practice practice practice than anything else.

Also I would rent, learn the basics..... Firgure out your machine when you get home, you should learn about trouble shooting fmq problems at your class I would amagine! Or I like the idea of a new machine! I got a Janome Horizon great for quilting and fmq.
