I am new on this message board. I am making a yellow brick road quilt. I have completed all the blocks and am trying to lay out the quilt but am confused about how to lay it out. I have 15 fabrics, mostly blues (dark, medium, and light). It is queen size. Do I arrange them with like shades, patches of like shades...? Totally random seemed too crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

I did mine totally random. You will probably have a block or two leftover. I have only seen one that actually had a "path" planned out in it. I'll go into webshots & do a search to see what examples there might be there.
Wow, there's lots to look through!

Thanks for finding all the examples. There sure are a lot of them. I think I have finally gotten it about the way I want it. Totally random was too chaotic for me. I tried organizing the colors, but finally took an yellow/orange fabric out of it and the whole thing came together. I took some photos. When I get them downloaded I'll post my plan, such as it is.

Looking forward to it! I agree, totally random sounds good in theory...

    Hi,

I have made several YBR quilts and I always follow the layout in the pattern. There is a pattern to it, but if you like your own way then go with that.

    Looking forward to the picture.

I have made several YBR's, but I have modified the layout and added a 4-1/2 (5" cut) border just inside the last outside ring of blocks. I use a fabric that reads as a solid to cut the 'noise' of the YBR. Really calms the quilt.

I too have made several YBR's I like to try and not get the same two fabrics together if possible and I really try and make sure that the most visual of the fabrics is evenly distributed throughout the quilt. I started doing a 2" narrow border, then a 4 1/2" border on the outside. I liked it better than the 6" one they call for. I am also into using a contrasting binding.

Thanks for the informatin. I finished mine without a border, mostly because I was in a hurry to get it done. It was gift and I had a deadline. My computer is down now, but will send a photo when I get it fixed. (I'm at the library right now, using theirs.

If I do another one, I will have a better idea how to plan it.

    Thimblebug,
My pattern says it was revised 10-06 so it may be a later edition. They give layouts for all the sizes on page 3. Maybe if you email atkinsondesigns.com or call them, they will send it to you?
