The yo yo quilts I have seen are not backed. Once I saw a picture of a yo yo on a bed on top of a colored sheet so it looked 3 dimensional.
I've seen a yo yo vest that was lined with a strong colored piece of fabric, so it kinda unified all the colors of the yo yo's.
They are so cute.! It's on my list of quilts to make.

The very first opportunity quilt my guild did was a yo-yo quilt. That baby was HUGE & yes, we did back it with a sheet. Ours had a very pastel-ish/30's fabric look to it, so they used a white sheet on the back.
My Dad won it at our quilt show, then donated to my aunt & uncle who used it to raise money for the Huntington's Disease Association. The first person to win it from them donated it back & they sold MORE tickets on it! It made a lot of money for them. :D

Like the earlier poster said, YOYOs are not usually backed with anything. They originally were placed over white sheets. Only after many of us inherited them, did we
begin to dislay them over colored sheets.
Their beauty is in the intricate work.

I've got the yo-yo wall-hanging in my avatar without a backing as I wanted our periwinkle wall to show through. When using yo-yos for a quilt, I'd tack each yo-yo down (knot tying) to be sure it stayed in place. Will be interested in seeing other responses. A great thread!

I didn't put a backing on any of mine, but a sheet should work well. You can tack it where the yo-yos are sewn together.

What a great story. Hope whoever kept it really loves it. It sounds beautiful--I love the 30's prints, and yo yo's.

No need to put a backing on a yo yo quilt, but you can do as you please.

When I was just a little girl, I watched my grandmother make several yo yo quilts. She never put any kind of backing on it.

I have one my mother did in the 40's and it has a red backing that she tacked all the way around each yoyo.
