I used to have some of those foam mats that click into each other. maybe got them from Home Depot. Now i have carpet in my sewing room so i let my son use them in the garage.

Do you have the room to sit and iron? If so, I can recommend it. My sewing machine and ironing table are at an L in the corner. When I am sewing, I simply swivel my chair to iron. My sewing table is a large kitchen table from the thrift store. It's 30" high. It's wood and I covered it with several layers of fabric to protect the surface from heat.

I am taller than you, don't know how tall my ironing board is. I cut a lot more than I press. I stand on a padded kitchen mat. Keeps my back from hurting. Table is the right size for me.

I do not know if this helps you but I have a rolling chair and I adjust my ironing board low so I can roll to it from my sewing machine.

I used to be 5'-6" until my last physical. They claim that I'm 5'-4.5" now. Grrrr... if they hadn't said it out loud it wouldn't be true! LOL...

At any rate, my ironing surface is 35" from the floor. It's a comfortable height for me.

I totally agree with sitting when pressing lots of blocks. I only stand when pressing a full top or doing regular laundry ironing. Find what works best for you.

I'm 5'5" and high waisted if that matters. My big board is 36.5" and my cutting table is 37" tall. I find for me as I have bad issues as well as feet issues to do short stints at the sewing machine, then pressing area, then cutting table and back to the sewing machine. This keeps me from having too many issues with my back and feet. I tried sitting once for 100 blocks, then went to press them for however long it took, then over to the cutting table to trim and my ankles swelled up like a balloon. Not to say my feet and back were screaming at me too. So I decided to separate my blocks into color groups so from 100 blocks to say 15-20 blocks at a time seemed to make it easier for me all around.

I am 5'4" and I have a drop down ironing board; the type that mounts on a door but mine is built into a cabinet in my sewing room; I put the metal 36" ruler under it; it fits perfectly just under the edge so I figure the top of the board is about 36 1/2 from the floor. NO bending at all.

Please keep in mind that if you line up five different people who are all 5’4”, and you will see they are all built different. (I come from a family of extremely short legs and long bodies) Just adjust yours to the best comfort you can. In your place, I would experiment with different things like can goods or plastic dishes, under the feet until you find your perfect fit. My ironing board is actually higher on one end to accomodate various back injuries over the course of my life. I iron on a slight downhill slope, and my iron has a iron shaped silicone cozy for it to lay on whether it is hot or cold, so no tipping problems on the slope.
