Are you loyal to your quilt shop or do you shop online?

I am loyal to my local quilt shop here in the Yukon. I'm also loyal to my not-so-local-back-home quilt shop and shop online from there. So I'm loyal to two places, one because it's my now home, and the other because it's near my family home.

I live in Oregon and am sort of close to Wenatchee. Been through there going to Canada. I go to Port Townsend, WA. all the time. I travel through Tri Cities, Yakima, Ellensburag and Seattle. I also go to Spokane. Nice to see someone close by.

Hey, I live in Oregon. North eastern Oregon. Small town outside of LaGrande. You have to travel I84 east to Pendleton, drive over the Blue Mountains to LaGrande and I'm 15 miles across the valley. I shop in Portland. I use to live in Beaverton. Nice to know you.

We have no quilt shops locally so I used to buy a lot online. I'm shopping in my stash now since I have retired and DH got an 18% pay cut last year. That said, my son and daughter-in-law live not far from Lolly's in Shipshewana, Indiana. Whenever I visit them it always includes a trip to Lolly's. Even if i don't have much money to spend, I will buy a yard or 2 of something or maybe a few fat quarters. It's a 4 hour drive there so it's not some place I can go often, which is probably a good thing. But Lolly's is a great shop. Actually it's 2 stores, the regular whop with all the great, new stuff, a bargain basement where everything is about $6.00/yd. and the quilt store where she sells ready made quilts. All the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, even the young man who works there. If I sound like a commercial for the shop, sorry.

I just moved back to southern CA and needless to say there are several LQS. So I have been checking them out. I have found that the ones that have peeked my interest so far are the ones that have their stores set up in an attractive way that makes the material look like candy in a candy shop. I want to buy everything. Of course being realistic and on a fixed income, I can't do that. I am also looking for helpful, friendly people as I am sort of new at all of this. I would like to start taking classes but I can't afford to do that right now. So I am going to go to the free work day where you bring your own project and work on it there in the store. That will give me a good asset as to how helpful and friendly everyone is. I have also bought on line and have had good success in that area. One thing about going to the local QS is that you get the material immediately and don't have to wait like when you order on line. But then it is exciting to get packages in the mail. LOL.

A group of us (and many others) are not loyal to the quilt shop just minutes from us and she carries beautiful fabric. BUT it is not a friendly shop at all. Instead we travel 1hr and 15 min to another quilt shop where it is just so delightful to visit!! The owner is fabulous. She has her own fabric line - patterns - is in many magazines and she loves people and we all love her! We spend at least 2 hrs in her store each visit as she makes it so fun and she has the latest and greatest. We have never been in her store that we didn't get a "lesson" on something or at least a demonstration. She promotes her whole town - on her web site she encourages shopping at the town stores and eating lunch out at the local eateries. She has been voted Business Woman of the Year several times!! If groups let her know they are coming, they have a full day at the shop! We can't wait to go see all her new findings in January!

I do not have a LQS, the closest one is 30 miles and I won't shop there! Her bs. practices are way too shady for my liking!
As for your LQS not having NEW fabrics.well;...if nobody buys the stock she has, she has no money to buy NEW anything! And with NEW fabrics, there are not that many out there and some companies are requiring shops to order entire lines instead of just picking a few out..so that limits what a shop can afford as well!

I try to use our local shop most of the time, but every once in a while someone on the board has fabric I haven't seen and at a great price. I've done that maybe 4 or 5 times. My local is kind of expensive, but very good with customers and is always helpful.

I buy ALL my fabrics online from the US as the price in Australia is three to four times the price in the US for exactly the same fabric. Postage is around $16 US if you order less than 9 yards.
The service is excellent and the choice of fabrics is unbelievable, I then take photo's of my quilts and post them back to the US for you all to judge, its sort of recycling in a way.
Anyway Merry Christmas from "Down Under", hope in 2012 we all continue to make beautiful quilts.
