Your First Quilt Block Ever?
#23
dunno what you'd call this one, but this was my first quilt ever made. Each colored triangle was sewn together to make a square, and then all the squares were sewn together to make the whole......if that makes any sense at all.

My first quilt was Eleanor Burns' Radiant Star. I decided one day in 1992 that I wanted to make a quilt. I bought a pattern book and followed the instructions for the queen size that would fit my bed. I had no idea what I was doing but it came out great and is on the bed in my guest room. It is the only quilt that I hand quilted, too.

My first (a HS home ec project in the 60s) was helping finish heat set crayon colored hand embroidered state flower blocks my mom and her sister had started for their hope chests back in the thirties. Used poly/cotton blend for the sashing, which of course outlasted the muslin background from the 30s. A family friend hand quilted it. Amazingly enough it survived regular use into the 90s but was destroyed when our house burned in 2000.

Mine would be a Sunbonnet Sue back when I was 5-6 years old. It is the first thing my Granny taught me when she was teaching me to sew and quilt. It was hand appliqued. I remember being sooo proud of it. I am sure it left a lot to be desired!

Circle on circle. It's a 9 patch variation from the thirties. Take your regular 9 patch blocks and cut out football shaped sections between the blocks to get a general idea of what it looks like. Similar in some ways to Robbing Peter to Pay Paul.
Never pick a pattern with curved seams for your first quilt. I should be fairly good at sewing curved seams by the time I'm done though and my wife likes it.
