This was a great question, I'm watching for the answers as well. I haven't invested in the 1/4" foot or special pins. Guess I need to.

    1. Needle dome - to keep 10 threaded needles for bindings and hand quilting
    2. Shape cutter - aka strip ruler; makes strips and blocks easy to cut and accurate
    3. Chalk pencils - for transferring stencils, marking lines
    4. Rotary blade sharpener - saves a lot of money
    5. A comfy chair

Oh - Aren't those KIA scissors nice! I bought a pair over 10 years ago at the Puyallup Sew Expo and they are still so sharp I have to be careful when I use them.

    1. Touro Tesoura thread clips - much quicker to use than scissors and only $1.49 at Vogue Fabrics online. Razor sharp and pointed.
    2. Ironing pad - using Sharon Schamber method
    3. Design wall - 4x8' insulation covered with batting and felt. No more crawling around on the floor!
    4. 505 basting spray
    5. Bright bendable light - saves my eyes

My list exactly, I'd also like to add 1/4" foot for machine
    This is my list, too.

    I started out with:
fiskars rotary cutter (lifetime gaurantee-when mine broke after 10 years they replaced it)
18" x 24" mat - easy to take to classes
    6" x 24" acrylic ruler - most often used
12 1/2" square ruler - second most used
    good pair of scissors
pins and needles ( I have recently gotten the pins with the flat flower heads. They are great. Easy for my arthritic fingers.)
good seam ripper (we all make mistakes)
This is a little more than 5. As you go you will find what you need for the type of quilting you do ( ie. hand quilting, applique etc.)

LOL! That's what I was thinking...man, are we slipping when the chocolate isn't near the top of the list! :-)

I am teaching a beginner class right now. I recomend :
    cutting mat, olfa the best
rotary cutter, start with the 45 mm size
    rulers, 6 X 24 and 12 1/2 X 12 1/2, to get started
sissors, good ones but any brand
pins, I like glass head so you can iron over
iron, I use a Wal-mart one. get the expensive one later
sewing machine in good working order, doesnt have to be expensive

I know this is more than 5, but you probably already have some of it. good luck. this board will help lots.
