I bet everyone know about this, but just in case other's are having the same issues I was. I was trying to figure out a way to easily and accurately cut hst and hourglass squares. This first pic shows the hst as first sewn, the original size and the cut size. The second shows placing a square ruler so that w/ two cuts and one placement the cut will be square and true. For this one I was making a 4.5 inch square so I placed the ruler w/ the stitched line at the 4.5 marks on the ruler.

I've tried this method and actually don't like it. If the ruler is placed on that stitched line and cut, when the HST block is opened and pressed, it's a teensy bit short due to the space taken up by the seam. I couldn't consistently get the accuracy I wanted by cutting on or just slightly behind the line so I stick with the old method of four cuts. More time consuming but it's the safest for me. I'm glad to see it works for you though Kass as I know it's faster. Thanks for sharing that method! ![Smile](https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png)
edited to add that for hourglass blocks, I will make the HSTs slightly larger, stitch them together and then cut down the final hourglass blocks.
I love how there is no right and wrong way to do things, just a bit different for everyone as to what works best for them.

Ok, so glad I didn't miss the block. I kept going through the posts looking for your original block with the strips, and figured I was going a bit nuts. You hadn't posted it! Whew...
