Boom 19 - Summer

Here's a sad tale about what can happen when you give back blocks that are too small:
As I've mentioned more than once, my local quilting group here in my town did a boomish swap, with 12.5" blocks like we do. Our 'leader' is a sweet older lady, about 90 years old but still going strong! She loves to do these blocks "quilt as you go" style, and quickly sandwiched all of hers and quilted them. They all looked like 12.5" blocks.... But when she went to join them into rows, she had three good rows and then the 4th was 1" smaller than the other three! Those blocks were imperceptably smaller than 12.5", but put together they really came up short. I feel so sad for her because there is no good fix for this, having quilted them already. Boo hoo... measure your blocks and fix them!

It's a shame that happened to your group member, sewbizgirl. I encourage everyone to check the size of the blocks you are sent from every swap before you start sewing them together or quilting them. Since everyone pieces slightly differently, seldom do all blocks meet up just right, every time. That's totally expected.
This round so far I'm pleased to say I'm finding a lot of beautiful blocks spot on for size and good construction . Yay you! (You know who you are!) I've found the occasional block up to 1/4 inch too small in one or both directions. It happens. But most problematic are those put together with what are essentially basting stitches and seams are as small as 1/16 of an inch in places. I'm left shaking my head. (There was no way to not see this while sewing so you know who you are.) I'm sure the remaining packages will have well-constructed blocks in them. I have confidence I'll be smiling ear to ear by the time I finish up the remaining blocks later today.

Went out this morning. Finally feeling a bit better. Between salmonella and the hysterectomy, I have been down about 6 weeks.

Hav4boys, first-I sure hope you're feeling better and recovering well from the surgery. And, may I say, your blocks are absolutely wonderful! I love the heart you made for me. Thank you so much. I love applique. Love your Sunbonnet Sues.
You've sure received a double whammy what with the surgery and then salmonelia. Things have gotta' get better for you now. Take care please. I look forward to swapping with you again, soon.
