Cricket my featherless chicken has been determined to be broody since she put in the time I'm going to give her a chick. She has no feathers to keep the baby warm though, so this afternoon I made her a maternity dress. So here she is sporting her new look.

There's Cricket, stylin' it! Will she set an egg or will you hatch it out for her?

Editted to ask.....Did you tell us you lost Elvis the rooster?

She sat on ceramic eggs b/c I didn't think she could keep an egg warm enough, and I hatched her a chick which I gave her last night, I haven't checked on her this morning but Gary will later.

I didn't have an Elvis, my original featherless roo was Rudy and he did die, my most recent favorite roo was Vader, and he died protecting his ladies from a threat.

Now I do remember it was Rudy. Sorry you've lost both roosters, but at least Vader went down in glory for the ladies. Do you still have the one with the little topknot?

Kass, what is the average lifespan of a chicken/rooster? We were given a huge barred rock rooster by our neighbors, when varmints killed off all of their chickens but him. We tamed him and carried him around like a pet. One day, not too many months after we got him, the kids were playing with him and he keeled over and died! Nothing wrong... I just figured he was at the end of his road and we didn't realize how old he was. Do they live about 2 years, normally?
