I have a couple of hens w/ small top knots, I'm always excited when a see a chick developing one, but that doesn't happen often anymore.

The production type birds have a shorter life span, the egg laying producers only a couple of years. On average a normal chicken probably about 3-4 years, I've heard of some that have made it to the 6-8 year age but that doesn't happen often.

I just figured he was at the end of his road and we didn't realize how old he was. Do they live about 2 years, normally?

Janice, I add my prayers and encouragement to the others here as you
walk through hospice care with your mom. You are doing the most important thing anyone can do, and that is love and serve and honor your mom. This time is a precious gift. Don't give the boom another thought --truly, months not weeks like someone mentioned. It's not like we all have no projects to work on in the meantime. You just take care of your mom and yourself and know that we are here for you. Sending a virtual cheesecake to share with your DH and sons.

Quick fyi that mom has died. She told us Sunday morning that she didn't want to die in the hospital, Monday she was discharged into home hospice care and Wednesday night she died. Am kind of in shock. I thought we had at least a week. But Mom had made up her mind and, as usual, that was that. Never a dawdler, my mother. Anyway, I'm content in the knowledge that she died peacefully, on her own terms, in her own time. I'm not myself right now so I'll just leave it all at that. Thanks to everyone who sent a note or posted here. I'll be back after a bit of a break to get my head and heart squared away. Hugs to all.
