Yes we were confused about the surfing Madonna too. It is a religious symbol. We have a big Latino population here. It was based on the virgen de Guadalupe you find in Mexico. This is a Catholic icon of Mary. It was controversial.

The statue is hated because he doesn’t look like a surfer. He looks awkward and odd. The artist said it was a beginning surfer.

QuOTE=sewbizgirl;8275839]MJP... wow, someone went to a lot of trouble to erect that shark around the statue. Wonder why the statue is so hated?

Love the 'surfer crossing' caution sign!

I don't really get the surfing madonna.... [/QUOTE]

Sewbiz, I love both of your fabrics, but that blue one really speaks to me. I got in on the $1 a yard stuff too, but they sure didn't have any of those two when I was there. Lucky buy! I'm looking forward to working with these.

Our town Encinitas, has a traffic sign for surf crossings. It’s a picture of a surfer carrying a surfboard. Whttp://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/W...H_Encinitas_CA

We we are also famous for the Cardiff kook statue which is a hated statue of a boy learning to surf. People dress it up all the time. The first time they put shark fins leading up to the statue that got closer and closer each day. Then one day the statue was engulfed by a shark with the boys body sticking out of his mouth.

We also have the beautiful Surfing Madonna mosaic that the artist stealthily put up on a train underpass. The town made him take it down. He put it up on a nearby restaurant wall. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfing_Madonna

One of our beaches, Swamis was mentioned in The Beach Boys song Surfing USA. We boogie board there.

    Surfing is all around!

I am enjoying seeing and reading about your local sites.

The blue surfer fabric was not Walmart fabric. I got it in Paducah during one of the shows. Unfortunately I didn't get the plate fabric for $1.... bought it before all that happened. I saw it in the clearance and it crossed my mind to get more, but decided against it since I hadn't used what I already had. I do love that one....

Today I am making a Warm Wishes out of some $1 Walmart fabric. It's nice!

Yuck - I'm sorry. Not fun to be sick in the summer....not that we want it in winter but at least it's more expected. My allergies have been horrific this year, so I understand feeling bad. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!

Janice, sorry you are under the weather. hope you feel better soon.

Jaba, your G-children are cute as buttons. I get to see my 2 nieces and nephew tomorrow. I am beyond excited. I have all the spoiling gifts in my suitcase. I made 1/2 and bought 1/2.

I am loving everyone's fabric choices. Especially the surfer fabric. That one is cool.

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far. I leave for FL tomorrow to spend a girls week with my sisters, Mom and their children. We are going to Hogwarts. I am a Harry Potter Fanatic. I have my Wand and I am ready.

I am getting so excited the 17th is only a few days away and I will be able to send my fabrics out. It has been a long time since I have been in this kind of swap and just reading what is happening so far is keeping me on my toes in anticipation.

Default Boom Biz - groups, etc.

Morning, all. Well, this summer isn't going at all like I expected, both good and bad. Life's like that, isn't it? "Best laid plans" and all that. And it's busy! This weekend I'm going up to NC to see my son and his fiance. Then next week a friend I haven't seen in 19 years is coming for a visit. Where has the time gone? Wow. It's wonderful but there's so much to do with little prep time! (I knew I should have had that back deck pressure washed earlier! Lol And I've got to attack the dust bunnies.) And the Boom is starting soon! Whew. And...well, that's enough for now.

So onto the Boom. The 2 month group currently has 7 members. We'll not fill that group since there are so few at this stage. One option will be for you each to send 19 f8s and I will distribute them among the members, meaning that you will have multiples of the same fabric. Some of you don't care for that but some don't mind. Most who signed up for the 2 month group are also in the 3 month so a second option is to absorb the 2 people who want only the 2 month group into the 3 month group. Making one group means only one set of fabrics this round. Those in the 2 month group, please give these options some thought. I'm inclined to go with option one but we need to keep in mind that if something happens to a member, such as with Joan last round, multiple F8s may be lost. And then there's the 3 month with a couple of vacancies now if my sleepy count last night was correct. If anybody wishes to join, please speak up soon! I'll post names again when I return from my weekend trip.

Thanks all, I am feeling better. Terriamn, I'm glad you're enjoying your lake time. Jaba, the grands pix are wonderful! GramE, I really like that blue and white quilt. It's been one of my favorites since you made it. MjpEncinitas, yes, go ahead and send a smaller piece but please no larger than 6 1/2 inches square please. Lstew2212, enjoy your Florida trip.

That's it for me. I've got to pack! I'll try to check in briefly but I might not be online until Sunday.
