I also use a scant 1/4", though I have to be careful as I often go just a tad scanter than I should. I piece mostly on a straight stitch machine with a narrow foot, and if I can see about 1/16" of fabric sticking out, that is where I need to be. There is a 1/4" mark and when I sew, I am lined up so that the mark is just visible. I need the fabric to the line, not on the line.
I've tried 1/4" feet, but then I need to line up the fabric with the edge of the foot, and I can't see if I'm going too narrow (which I tend to do). I'd rather be able to see a bit of fabric and then I know I'm where I need to be.

here is a block for bibliostone. it is a repeat block pattern for me during the flurries, but I liked it with your fabric.
and another for Hav. I tried to replicate the compass on the map. Perhaps it needs the N,S,E,W, but i will leave that up to you!

This 8 pointed star is for Bibliostone. Of course I had to add appliqués of those cute owls.
i see my phot cut off the points and their quarter inch. It’s all there Biblio.

All these blocks are so pretty!! I am loving watching them appear. I know I am not the perfect patchwork maker but I put my best foot forward. Some blocks may be a bit skewed but they measure 12.5. (I hope). I measure and play and trim to get them right. I just hope I have them all as right as possible. Many of my blocks are a scant 1/4" too. Not all I never put much thought to that. I will from now on! The scant 1/4" may resolve some of my minor issues. One thing for sure my block making is much better than my photography. I can't take a straight picture for anything. Now to go to the gallery again and look at all the pretties.

Afternoon, Flurries!
MadeBySue, yes, a scant quarter is my go to seam allowance although I sometimes make it a hair smaller so I must be watchful. Suddenly my block is too large and I've got to take it apart to fix it. Find whatever seam allowance gives you the right size block and stick with it. It takes practice. Thank you, MBS, for my pretty block. Just what I was looking for.
MJP, your darling applique on Bibliostone's star is wonderful. Got to love those owls.
LAF, I think the Compass explains itself really. Neat idea!

Thank you for all the comments and info about the seam allowance...good information! I've struggled with having a consistent 1/4 inch beyond my start points, for when the block is sewn into the quilt. I'll continue to play around with different settings and techniques.
Beautiful blocks MJ and Laff...very creative!
