Ok dahlings, I am here to clear up the questions.Hubby insisted I clean house this morning, as the dog fur was all over the cats. I guarantee that I have learned my lesson and will ALWAYS put notes in from now on (hey, a first timer mistake). There are actually 3 different fabrics floating about from me, as I didn't have enough of any one to make 37 f8-s. and they will not all be put in the same quilt. Lady bugs on black just won't mingle well with purples, and red leaves were just too pretty, so they cried out to be included in the swapping. So just have fun, put any stash fabric that plays nicely with whatever color you got. Clear as mud?
Elizabrat, I understand the garlic fetish. I keep a 32 oz jar of minced garlic in the front of the fridge, and a spoonful goes into just about everything I cook. I think what I came up with for the block will work well (DH suggested meatball fabric. I bet there is some out there somewhere...).

Garlic question: We are just starting out on the whole "grow you own" thing. This year we did corn, lettuce, and tried cantaloupes (the shoots never even made it because we got 5" of snow Memorial Day weekend).

So we've been talking about garlic, zuchinni, potatoes, corn, and various herbs next year. But the garlic... that's where our confusion really begins.

Do you plant it whenever? Or does it have a season? We were thinking some kind of mobile planter so that it can come in when it starts snowing in 2 months. Can anyone provide suggestions or hints?

And also... what on earth to do with the pepper fabric!? I'm having a garden-minded morning today.

Oh elisabrat....you have the spirit of a mischievious child. I love it. Every time I go over to the senior center to chit chat with the quilt ladies.....a bingo game is going on. I so want to run in that room and yell BINGO. But my quilting ladies restrain me. LOL. I would have joined you escaping.

urgodschild, lol you and think alike and why the heck not yell bingo just to make them look and smile. I used to do that wave, you know the parade vana white wave? when they rolled me down for this or that test. the people in the hall just to do it too when I went by and it was hysterical to see the looks on their faces like what the.. I said hey I was going on my float (bed) in a designer gown traveling with my entourage (runner guy who pushed you around) why not wave and when I came back to my room I would yell out.. LUCY IM HOME I think those poor young men couldnt wait to dump and run when it came to my turn. I got almost 90 percent of the runners to sing karioke to me lol as we went in elevators etc. One would even hit up people with flowers and ask them if they could have one for me which well they gave me. great way to snag flowers lol (talk about making ME embarassed sheesh) but ok since your handing them out grin. me mischievious? uh.. ok. I own that one.

bell peppers would be a bit tougher.. you could stuff them with flowers? or another veggie? have a critter sneaking a peak over the top Kelly.. um peppers in a bowl? basket? I think they are for table runners/matts so I would skip super light colors so that way if stuff gets spilled on them.. you know? just my two bits which is worth the price you paid for it. I am not getting rich here. still think roses would be good with garlic. oh now I am hungry again. Jaba thank you so much for making us all fat. Next time send out turnups. No one craves those.

BUT! If you like salsa (I'm a Tostitos kind of girl), you can make turnip chips in the microwave. Way more healthy than actual tortilla chips. Add a bit of salt and they taste like really crappy generic chips.

Garlic:

When is the best time to plant garlic in the home garden? The answer is, "it depends".
In the USA and Europe, garlic can be planted either in the early spring or late fall / early winter.

Spring Planting
Poor weather conditions often mean that spring planted garlic produces smaller bulbs. In addition the seed garlic must be chilled before planting in order to cause it to break out of its dormancy. That said, spring garlic planting can produce good results in the warmer Southern areas where it is often planted in late February or March. It also removes any possibility of the plant being damaged by the winter cold.

Autumn / Fall Planting
In more Northerly areas it more common to plant garlic towards the end of the year. In Europe there is a tradition of planting garlic on the shortest day of the year, however this is probably more for symbolic reasons than horticultural ones.

The usual advice to gardeners is to plant fall garlic soon after the first major frost of the year, usually between mid-October and late November depending on your local climate. Garlic is generally winter hardy, however can be damaged if the temperatures are very cold and the snow cover thin. If this is the case, cover the garlic with straw to protect it.

If all is well then the shoots of fall planted garlic should emerge from the ground in early spring. If not then you still have the opportunity to plant a spring crop.
