Ok I marked out 2 3" circles. I cut them both out. The second one I didn't cut exactly on the circle. I rough cut it.
The left one I turned under the edge 1/4" and ran a basting thread through it. On the right one I didn't choose to turn the edge. A step and time saved. I ran a basting thread around the edge. ( When you know you are going to trim it later why bother? tho you could do the extra step if you like)
The left one I drew up to close the circle. The right one I drew up to close the circle.
I turned the left one over and I turned the right one over.
I chose not to use the template on the right one as it really doesn't have anything to do with the process. It is an extra step added to attain a better circle. As is the sizing and the ironing.
So take a look. Are they both a yoyo?
So bottom line. I chose to skip the step of folding over the edge. Does that make the right one not a yoyo? It looks the same. You could do the step if you want but that defeats the purpose of the cut down method. It takes time you don't need to do when using my "yoyos" for making the DP blocks.

but its the finished edge the makes a yoyo - it has to be a visually finished product from both ends.
i agree that its not necessary to use a yoyo on a drunkard path block or in the jane block. it isn't even necessary to use an applique stitch like the other tute shows.
what you're using is not a yo yo its an applique piece that resembles a yo yo but could not function in the other ways that a yo yo can.
if its not a visually finished product from both sides its technique is not a yo yo.
its not the gathering that makes the yo yo, its not the template that makes the yo yo - its having a finished product that can work from both sides.

i tend to do that without knowing.
on the board once i was trying to explain to someone that the majority of the time i make art quilts and how it came out was
"i don't make quilts that people sleep around with"
LOL - now how naughty is that, i'm blushing just typing it.
i'm very shy in that way. i'm married 19 years now and i never really dated much aside from DH.
i never even kissed a boy until i was 20.

I never dated until I was in college. Then I only dated one other person before my DH. My daughter didn't date anyone before her DH. They knew each other from 7th grade on. She was asked a lot and had alot of friends who were boys but didn't care to date. Didn't have anything to do with me or anything I said. She is just a strong willed individual who knows what she wants or doesn't want.
