You can usually find crushed walnut shells at the pet store or a feed store.

This round I used poly beads ordered from Amazon. I have used poly-fil and also walnut shells. The stuff they put in lizard cages can be crushed walnut shells too and much cheaper than the crafty versions. Sometimes I use a combination of poly-fil and one of the heavier ones in the bottom.

I looked for walnut shell in pet shop and feed stores in the town where I live and they didn't know what I was talking about. Then I saw it advertised in a bbq add for smoking meat. I bought 2 kgs at a good price too.

I read once to use emery sand to keep the needles sharp, but I could never find a source for it, and I read somewhere else to use cut up or pressed together wool because wool has lanolin and it keeps the needles lubricated and the rust away. Any truth to any of this? My nephew is allergic to tree nuts, so walnut shells are a no no for me. I used the wool option this time to keep the pincushion lightweight, but at the same time, I don't know if it is true that it will keep the needles lubricated and rust free. Hugs all.

Very pretty Marion. Love the blues. I have just tipped my toe into paper piecing but it was fun.
