    I think this will work:
    you will need the following;
    2 - 1" squares (1 white/1 light)
    2 - strips 1" x 1 1/2" (1 light/1 dark)
    2 - strips 1 " x 2" (1 light/1 dark)
    2 - strips 1" x 2 1/2" (1 light/1 dark)
    1 - strip 1" x 3" (1 dark)
    1 - strip 1" x3" (dark) folded in 1/2 lengthwise and sewn right sides together on 3" side and turned for the loop
    1 - 3" square fabric for the back
    1 - 3" square batting

    sew together as follows / I used scant 1/4" seams;

    center blocks 1 & 2 are 1" square white & light sewn together
    then add block 3 to bottom { strip 1" x 1 1/2"} light
    then add blodk 4 to left side {strip 1" x 1 1/2"} dark
    then add block 5 to top {strip 1" x 2" } dark
    then add block 6 to right side {strip 1' x 2"} light
    then add block 7 to bottom {strip 1" x 2 1/2"} light
    then add block 8 to left side {strip 1" x 2 1/2"} dark
    then final block 9 to top {strip 1" x 3"} dark

    after you have finished the log cabin block, sandwich the folded loop in the corner on right side of fabric
    add backing fabric right sides together and batting if desired stitch around edges leaving a 1 1/2" opening to turn
    clip corners / turn / square corners and stitch shut the opening.
    add chain to loop and you should have something similar to the picture.

    I also did a 9 patch using 1" x 3" strips which was a real challenge, ended up with 1 1/2" square almost impossible to work with.....don't recommend it......maybe a 1 1/2" strip would work better.
