Sewing small pieces takes time so you can't be in a hurry. I starch bigger pieces like FQs and then cut them to the size. Lots of blocks can be made bigger and trimmed down. I Lightly press seams open and then use a fine detail paint brush and stroke a line of starch on the seam line and press again. The last thing I do is trim the seam allowance to 1/8".
Use a fine thread and needle, very important. This will make a big difference in how the finish looks. Big thread is very bulky on small pieces.
The best way to practice getting comfortable with small pieces is to make four patches in smaller and smaller sizes down to 1" finished, until you are sure of your technique. Then do the same with HSTs. You will be very surprised at how easy it is with practice. It is really just a matter of getting comfortable with it and the more you do it the more fun it is.
I do hope you give a small WH a try. Not much of a loss if you decide you don't like it and WOW if you do!!!
peace

Interesting. I do do paper piecing. Very much a beginner still but atleast I have a life saver, the paper, when sewing. I did notice that Lori Holt, Farm Girl Vintage Sampler, recommended pressing the seams open on the 6 inch blocks, using Aurifil thread and a 70/10 needle. I use Aurifil thread and think that helps with piecing. I will try her recommendation. I normally starch my fabric before I press the whole fabric , Fat quarter, and then cut.

Sign up list
It seems everyone likes to sign up so I am doing a sign up list.
However the only list that counts is the ready to mail list at the end.
This is just for fun and to see who is interested.
For any new swappers make sure you send me a pm with your info.
For all OLD swappers LOL I have decided to ask for a phone number.
Not a requirement but when things go wrong it would be helpful.
Welcome to Rose and Jan Rutherford as a newcomer to our swap!
Share all the pictures you like! we love to see progress pics and you won't
spoil any surprises as noone not even me knows who will get which WH!

Since I've started paper piecing, my scraps aren't as "scrappy" anymore ... I've actually found a use for pieces of fabric that are 5-6 inches square and smaller (I used to just toss or donate!).
I've had such fun sending Ube some of my scrappies, but Rhonda, if you want some too, let me know! I always have lots (mainly because I don't buy huge amounts of fabric - I usually only buy a meter extra of what I need. And then I'll use some of that in a paper piecing quilt and then I'm done!)

For those who don't know I am a miniaturist and I love doing things as small as I can. I don't pp but I use my own shortcut methods.
I always hate to see scraps in the trash LOL If nothing else you can always use them for crazy quilting or crumb quilting. My version I call it confusion quilting. Scraps are wonderful for that.
I make butterflies with scraps. the single butterfly below is made with my confusion method'
The butterflies are give or take 3" long by 2"-3" high. I also have some that are about 2" x 2". the butterflies can be added to a quilt for a 3D effect. I made a quilt with 3D flowers and butterflies but i couldn't find it right off. If I find it I'll post it later.
If anyone is interested I do have a free tute for making the butterflies and 3D flowers

Here is my doll quilt. the two butterflies top and middle one are only attached by the one wing. the outer wing is free to move and I used a copper wire twisted for the antennae. The flowers also are free moving only attached at the base of the flower. The bottom butterfly is appliqued down.
