I recently did a quilt that needed to have triangles added to it to make it square ... This is what I did - I will try and explain in writing!

I took some paper and taped it together so that it fit under the quilt of where I need the triangle. I drew a line on the paper that lined up the edge of the quilt. Then I measured from the middle of that point and made a straight line on the paper. I then took my ruler and went to the corner of the quilt where I would sew the triangle and made a line from there and connected it to the straight line. Do the same thing with the other corner. (You'll have to measure of course ... you don't want one line being 7 inches and the other being 5 LOL)

Take the paper out from under the quilt and you have the size of triangle that you need ... then add the 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Does this make sense? I can picture it perfectly in my head, and have done it successfully, but not sure if my writing it makes sense.

My mother, who was a wonderful seamstress, made a wallhanging for Christmas one year on her embroidery machine. She set her blocks on point and the way you explained cutting your triangles is exactly how she did it. There is a formula and if you would just google making setting triangles you will find the method and math you need. If you want to PM me with your address I have a chart that I got several years ago from a quilting website I had been a member of and next week when I can afford to buy ink for my printer I will make a copy and send it to you, if you would like to have it.

Ube, your wall hanging is breathtaking. If it was me I would not square and just add a border with the green. In order to hang it I would use the triangle corners; one on top and on each side. The person who receive this piece of art (me, me...) can then use two dowels to hang it.

Ube, that is beautiful. Sorry I have no helpful hints about finishing, I have never done hand work or hexies before. If you are trying to disguise any unevenness I would use the same green that has already been used.

Oh holy cats ube you did it again - its stunning. I agree with Anoka, I would just bind it. The shape is part of what makes it so beautiful.

I think I am in piecing trouble here!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions you helped me with. My one big problem now is what technique do I use to finish the edge?

If I do decide to add the squaring triangles, I will use the green fabric.

Now how do I finish it? I think it has to be done by hand. I can't machine sew a border or binding on, that would loose the edge of the hexies. I have to figure a way to add or finish the edge to hide the uneven edge without loosing part of the edge. How? If I just finish with a knife edge, I think it will look crooked.

I need a creative technique to try.

    More help, please! Thanks
    peace

Getting a chance to snap some pictures is always exciting for me. Today I was able to catch our daily visitors.
This one is through the blinds as they follow single file over the hill heading for breakfast.

They saw me in the kitchen window and I snapped the three that didn't care. They had corn on their minds.

    A good morning.

Ube I made Christmas ornaments out of some of my Dresden Ks. I sewed an embroidery stitch over the frayed edges. It closed off the raw edge pretty well and looked decorative. You could try that and see if it works. Try it on a small piece first before using it on your hexies. You would cover the raw edges and still see your hexies.
I used a herringbone stitch and I tried a couple of other stitches on my machine. not sure what they were called.

Lovely pictures! I miss living in the country. We used to have deer and wild turkeys and all sorts of interesting folk go by. Tho I'll pass on the skunks. Our dog found a skunk's retreat in our back yard and boy did our house stink for awhile! He layed on the porch which was beside the kitchen which was beside our bedroom. Woke us up pretty quick!!
