Mom-6, I have posted the measurements for this block in the first section. I did not use the 4 inch with the attached triangles. I used a 6-1/2 square and added the 3.5 squares and did the diagonal line from center to outside, sew on the line and then cut. It is not a hard pattern...it is one 6-1/2 inch (black) block with four 3-1/2 squares for each corner; two 3-7/8 inch blocks of the background and the geese color, and four rectangles 6-1/2 (goose) x eight 3-1/2 squares of the same fabric of the center square blocks. The link posted is to show how to make the flying geese with no waste of fabric by cutting off the corners. It is one 7-1/4 square, with four 3-7/8 squares. The link shows how to place the 3-7/8 inch squares so you will get four flying geese...instead of cutting four separate rectangles and attaching two smaller squares on each side.

It is equal for all levels of quilt makers. This block pattern is from Quilterscache.com, but is a 6 inch paper pieced pattern. I changed the block to a 12.5 unfinished block. This block consists of one black center piece of 6.5 square. Four rectangles of 6-1/2 by 3-1/2. Two 3-7/8 squares of the background fabric and two 3-7/8 squares of the same fabric that makes the corners on the black center - those corner pieces are four squares of 3-1/2. If it would help, I will do a step by step pic as to cutting and putting together. there seems to be much confusion by the link I posted. Many of us use the no waste flying geese method, which is explained in the link. The link IS NOT THE BLOCK we are making. If anyone is still confused, please pm me, and I will try to clear up the confusion.

I have removed the link that seems to be causing so much confusion. The dimentions for the blocks are listed. Later tonight I will post pic by pic cutting and putting together for this block. There seems to be alot of confusion. Hope this will clear it up!! ;)

I have removed the link. It was for a way to make the no waste flying geese, not the pic of the actual block we are doing. Hopefully this is solve the problem of the confusion.

Here is the step by step pics for making this block. There are several of them!

These are all the pieces that you will need for the block. Color 1 - black is 6-1/2 6-1/2 square. Color 2 - is the red/orange floral. There are four squares of 3-1/2 x 3-/12 AND two squares 3-7/8. Color 3 is the orange rectangle 6-1/2 x 3-1/2. Color 4 is the beige (background) two 3-7/8 x 3-7/8 squares and eight 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 squares.

Begin with the 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 black center square. Take one of the 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 squares, draw a line from corner to corner, place it on one corner of the black and stitch ON the line from the center to the side.

Do the same on the opposite corner. Then cut 1/4" away from the line sewn.

After you cut 1/4 " from the line, press the corner open.

Repeat this on the opposite corners.

This is the completed center block with the four corners.

Let's begin to make the 4 flying geese. Take one of the color 3 (orange rectangle) right side up. Take one of the color 4 (beige) 3-1/2 x 3-1/2" squares, draw a line from one corner to the other. Place the square on the rectangle with the line from the center to the outside.

Sew ON the line from the center to the bottom corner.

This shows the progression of the block. Top - 3-1/2' square sewn on rectangle. Middle shows cutting 1/4" from the line. Bottom shows the corner pressed open.

Now do the same with the right side with another 3-1/2 square.

Progression for the right side of the flying geese. You will make 4 of these.

Now let's start to make the 4 corner pieces. Take one of the color 2 (red/orange floral), and one of the color 4 (beige) 3-7/8 x 3-7/8 blocks and put them right sides together. Draw a line fron corner to corner.

Instead of sewing ON the line, sew 1/4" TO THE LEFT OF THE LINE.

When you get to the end, turn the block around and do the same. You will now have two sewn lines on either side of your drawn line from corner corner.

    Cut ON the line.

From one 3-7/8 square block you will now have two half square triangles (HST) Repeat this with the other block. You will have 4 HST. Cut the little dog ears off of these blocks.

Now all of the pieces are made. You have one center, four flying geese and four corner HST. Place one of the FG on either side of the center block, with the tips or points pointing away from the center block. Sew them on.

Attach one HST to either side of another FG, making sure of the color placement of the HST.

And your block is done!! So....now join the swap!

I realize that this should be in the tutorial section, but this is specifically for the block to be made for the Oriental Hourglass swap.

I did the math on my Quilters Calculator. It seems like a lot of fabric compared to the other block, especially since it's the same size.

    Color 1 - 5/8 yd
    Color 2 - 1 1/4 yds
    Color 3 - 1 1/8 yds
    Color 4 - 1 5/8 yds

Has anyone else done the math for 12 blocks? Just curious if I am doing something wrong.

I calculated the amounts and get different from you. Here is my math. Bear in mind that I do my calculations based on WOF as being 40 inches wide after washing (may be 42 or so, but I am being slightly conservative)

I am using the colors as what I used, the only one you need to keep as mine is the center - black

Color 1 (black - center) 1/2 yd with 4 inches WOF (width of fabric) left over. You will need 12 squares total. You will get 6 blocks per row, you need 2 rows. You will only need 13 inches of fabric, but unless you can get the shop to cut you 1/4 yard plus another 5 inches - you will end up purchasing a 1/2 yard.

Color 2 (my red/orange floral) 1 yard. Since you are cutting both 3-1/2 and 3-7/8 inch squares, I based the measurements at 4 inch squares. You will need to cut 48 3-1/2 inch squares and 24 3-7/8 inch squares...making a total of 72 squares. You will get 10 squares per row. You will need to cut 8 rows. 8 rows of 4 inches per row =32 inches total = 1 yard.

Color 3 (my orange rectangle) 1 yard. You will need to cut 48 rectangles. I calculated it two ways. First, cutting the strips at 3-1/2 wide then into 6-1/2 long, you will get 6 rectangles per row. You need to cut 8 rows. 8 rows of 3-1/2 inches =28 which make the amount needed 1 yard.

Color 4 (my beige) 1-1/2 yard. You will need to cut 24 3-7/8 squares and 96 3-1/2 inch squares...a total of 120 squares. Again, basing the squares at 4 inches (always allow for a little leeway when cutting) you will get 10 blocks per row. You need 12 rows. 12 rows at 4 inches wide=48". 48-36 (1 yard) is 12 which is 1/3 yd, but I would rather have a little extra. So instead of purchasing 1-1/3 yd, I would purchase 1-1/2.

So - the totals I come up with are as follows:
Color 1 =1/2 yard (or you could actually get by with 2 FQ's
    Color 2 = 1 yard
    Color 3 = 1 yard
    Color 4 = 1-1/2 yard

It does seem like more fabric - remember that the other blocks were only squares. This has flying geese and corner triangles on the blocks which cause wasted fabric when you cut the corners.

Yeah....this is an awfully quiet thread.......And it is open to anyone, not just to those who did the Blocks of the Orient.
