I have an idea for my blocks, but won't get to try it for a while. I am determined to finish my underground rail road quilt, and I'm doing the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, but probably only 2/3 of it.

Not sure when I will get my blocks made into quilts. I have so much holiday stuff to work on first. My son's birthday is Nov. 15 so I have to get his quilt completed, pronto. Then there are Christmas donation quilts to finish... The florals you all made into beautiful blocks for me will make great Spring quilts for the hospital. |
Did someone in this swap do a tut on QAYG?? Ive watched a couple on You Tube but they are both so different. One uses sashing the other you quilt then sew the blocks together then put the entire backing on at once. Id like to know which way you all do yours. I did the sashing one last quilt I used it on.

Sewbiz did a tutorial w/ narrow sashing, I did one w/ wider pieced sashing, both are in the tutorial section.

I'm interested in trying some piecing using the press seams open method. Leah Day, one of my favorite online teachers, makes a compelling argument for doing this. She points out pressing to the side was carried over from when we hand quilted and then points out pressing open leads to more accurate piecing. With a small enough stitch length this method is not any weaker than pressing to the side. Anyway here's the YouTube video. I listen to these as podcasts when I quilt.

I press seams open all the time where it works better. I think there are definite advantages and draw backs for each method (open and to the side) and a place where each works the best.
