More inspiration to finish up your tops... here is one that I finally got put together from the Boomerang 5 East swap in late 2011. I made 6 blocks to finish up and the 4 half blocks for fillers. We staggered them with the black dots and really like how it ended up. I provided the rainbow striped fabric and asked for "fun & funky" blocks and I think everyone came in a winner. I wanted to use it for a fund raiser for our family readiness group (FRG -Army National Guard Families) but I don't think I will get it finished in time...maybe for next year. :)

Dad is such a slave driver I might actually get all my blocks together sometime. I've got blocks for a patriotic one yet and a funky chicken layout along with a funky cat layout....my brain is tired.

I am finishing this up and posted on the old site but will post here also for the new participants to be able to see what everyone came up with and what I got when I received my blocks back from the fabric I sent. My fabric was of the clay pots and this is everyone's blocks. I think it's going to be a pretty awesome quilt.

Pretty fantastic. And BIG.. that is one BIG quilt. LOL. I like that you set it in an Attic Windows shashing. Very nice.

Fraew 08-07-2012 07:07 PM

Oh Jaba! That looks fantastically awesome from here! Wow.

moonwork42029 08-07-2012 07:30 PM

Jaba -- love love love how it's looking! I too like the attic window...I might have to use that one again soon.

marytoddliz 08-07-2012 07:52 PM

Jaba, I love your quilt, it turned out very nice. The colors look very nice together. Is there a tutorial on the boards to do the Attic Window Sashing? I think I have the 12 in block, I might be able to figure it out. OK back to 1 1/2 inch squares, how did quilters do it before rotary cutters?

Barbgil 08-08-2012 06:37 AM

Would like to join. How do I sign up.

LovingIzabella 08-08-2012 06:39 AM

clsurz a small group is 16 a large group is the 35 blocks to make. So I will put you down for a large. You have time to change your mind :)
Babrgil-send me a PM with your name, address, email addy, weekend phone number & what size group you wish to be in and I will add you to the list.
We have almost one large group and several small groups. I think once we fill the one large group I will close signups and let the swapping begin :)
Hugs
April

ssnare 08-08-2012 06:44 AM

Love everyone's fabric so far.

jaba 08-08-2012 06:50 AM

Didn't have a tute. These blocks measure 12 1/2" unfinished just like for this swap. Out of the black(side) and the tan(bottom) I cut 2" wide by 12 1/2" strips from each color. Then I cut 2 3/8 X 2 3/8" squares of each, sew together 1/4"seam each side of the middle, cut in half, yield 2. Sew black strip to each side, then sew the black and tan square to the tan strip. careful to match the direction of colors, I had to take it out a time or 2, then sew to bottom of your block. Now I'm sewing the rows together. Plan to add a 1 1/2"inner border and 4 1/2" outer border so it should measure out about 78 X 91. Pretty close to a queen size.

stitchingpost 08-08-2012 07:08 AM

If you need to fill the large group, could you take me out of small group and put me in large group it would help, wasnt planing on doun,36blks but i guess u can ,that means i got to cut 15 more pieces of fabric, omg lol

stitchingpost 08-08-2012 07:11 AM

Only if it will help to get us started ,i will do large,if not keep me in small, thanks, let me know

stitchingpost 08-08-2012 07:28 AM

Tell them FREE fabric and see what happens ,,lol

DogHouseMom 08-08-2012 09:06 AM

I have a question about block size ....

My favorite kind of "sampler block" quilt are those that are made up of different block sizes. Some are 12", some 6", some are square and some are rectangle.

Would it be OK if I were to ask folks to make ANY SIZE block they wanted as long as it FINISHED to a multiple of 3"? A 12" square is still OK - and good - but it would be neat to get a variety of sizes.

Elisabrat 08-08-2012 09:16 AM

I will think now 35 vs 15 blocks, 3 and some days to do it.. one block every 3 days or so right? I will switch if it helps get the games going but you guys.. start sending that fabric out asap so I have enough time here to do it. I need a purpose in my down time days and I am floundering right now with not much to do other than house work (BORING) and heck it takes my mind off dialysis so YES switch me over. Not a single other quilt project to do anyways :) I have done one twin, two 60 x 60 couch quilts, four wall hangings, almost done with my Henrietta Whiskers quilt (needs quilting) three DQ's, and four pin cushions other than that.. nothing and this is since June 8th. I need something to play with! Kensington and you other on the fencers.., jump on over to the other side with me. dare you :) just look at the cool quilts that have been done this way. 'LOOK" COME ON OVER TO THE LARGER SIDE..

FREE FABRIC! FREE FABRIC! here is an image for those who want to fantasize: opening your mail box. Packages and packages, and more packages.. all full of FABRIC.. all addressed to you .. if that isn't the ULTIMATE in fantasy dreams I don't know what is. Sign me up. oh wait, you already did. Re sign me. I like that fantasy tremendously.

kensington 08-08-2012 10:03 AM

I am in for the one small set I signed up for. I can't change that Elisabrat, sorry. This will tie up right in the middle of the holidays. I have 7 kids and 8 grandkids. I shut my craftroom down when my 18 Christmas trees go up and I don't use it again until they come down. I don't want to put myself through that kind of stress.

buddy'smom 08-08-2012 10:07 AM

You put up 18 Christmas trees?? WOW!!!

I sure do, some are small, some are large, one is very big... I have a 3 story, 6 bedroom, 4 bath home and I put one and sometimes more in every room. Including bathrooms and hallways and entries. LOL. I decorate every room, change bedding, and wall decor... the whole nine yards, it takes me a week with a crew to get done working all day. But, it's beautiful, I entertain lots and everyone loves it. Kids really love it for all the moving, musical, singing things there are to see and touch.

But, you do see my delima here. Right? LOL. This swap/quilt will be the 3rd one I complete before Christmas and I don't want to let anyone down or overwhelm myself. Taking it slow.

buddy'smom 08-08-2012 10:36 AM

Oh, I want to come to your house. I love Christmas soooooooooooo much, I usally do Christmas blocks, but this time I'm doing halloween for a change.

Ok...now you have me intrigued...you MUST take pictures of all 18 when you put them up this year... :D A friend of mine did 15 in her home and I thought that was a bunch...I fight to get my 1 tree inside and 1 tree outside up...good luck!!! :) Can't wait to see it...can I join buddy's mom and come to your house???

moonwork42029 08-08-2012 11:54 AM

I think I live the closest to her so I should really get to come see it...we don't put one a tree any more. Hubby is gone all week and with just me there and the 2 furcats it's not worth hollering at them when I get home and have a mess. If Dad is still with us at Christmas he won't want it up either as he never has one at his house. Oh yeah, and the hubby put the longarm where I use to put the tree anyway...so there's no room now even if I wanted to set it up. Guess I get off lucky in some ways like that. I've got scads and scads of stuff under our house so I guess I should give it to others....mmmm now to get someone young and skinny to drag it out, lol.

kensington 08-08-2012 04:21 PM

I have pictures of my house decorated... I should start a picture thread for you. My kids used to whine about helping, until one year I did not do so much. They would rather help than not see this house decked from top to bottom! Even Dh does all he can to help without complaint. I've even gone back to getting a real tree for my BIG tree that is all Hallmark ornaments. Well, actually all of my trees, save one, the aluminum tree has Hallmark ornaments. Which is why I have so many trees, I collect Hallmark ornaments. :o

Elisabrat 08-08-2012 07:32 PM

Kensington, I was wondering since I am unable to travel your way hows about you stop your swaps say in August and you travel around and set us up.. you know you could have a second business here.. wow, all I can say is wow. I don't do a tree anymore but do put green garlands all along the beams with lights and all my glass ornaments, cats cant get them there! In my treeless defense I do have 35 over 100 foot trees in my yard and the national forest literally across the street (ie RIGHT across the street) so I am not actually treeless. And I decorate for each and every holiday.

Next, wow who cleans all those rooms? NOT me. Fantasy home? one bedroom, one bath no dining room and a maid. That is a fantasy home. If I had 7 kids I would well, be still recovering. and your here quilting AND decorating. How old is your youngest?

My youngest is 18, turning 19 this year. My oldest is 38. I have 6 boys and 1 girl. I have 8 grandkids. 6 boys and 2 girls. I have one son in the Army and 3rd year of College, one in the Marines (just returned from Afghanistan), my girl is an exec with Cerner Corp. My oldest is a GM for a Restarant Chain in Wa. DC. and the last 2 starting college next week. My husband just retired April 1 from the NAVY, after 26 1/2 years.

It took me a minute to realize you were saying I could drive from place to place decorating your homes for Christmas. ROTFLOL. I've had offers. I could make a business out of it. I've done it for people. One of the reasons I shut down on crafts the last of November is that it's all I can do to keep up with my own decorating, wrapping, cooking, baking and entertaining. I have to stay focused. LOL. All of my decorating is done by the end of Thanksgiving weekend, then before Dec. 1 we get the real tree and put it up. I love it. My mom did it that way to.

PS... We all keep it clean. I do the main floor.. Living room, dining room, kitchen, Den, craft room, Master bed and bath, and guest powder room. The boys split the other 2 baths and do their own rooms. Unless we are having something here, then Dh and I clean it all from top to bottom. He is a big help. Dh does all the yard work and takes care of the pool. That is his baby.

SheriR 08-08-2012 08:13 PM

Ooooh boy I sent a pm and signed up! Can't wait to get started!

nygal 08-09-2012 03:01 AM

Yea I'm "in" too. I am excited about this swap!!

nygal 08-09-2012 06:02 AM

I will buy envelopes and then I will be all set to mail out too. I am sending in all Asian themed fabrics. I've had the fq's for a few years and I will love having blocks made with them. Some fussy cutting may work out best on a few of them!

Who ever gets my fabrics, feel free to keep the scraps. I think it would be nice to be able to keep the scraps from the ones we receive to add to our own scrap stash. :)

April

Put me down for the small of 16 please. Thanks.

moonwork42029 08-09-2012 06:34 AM

Generally you do keep the scraps unless someone specifically asks in a note for them to be returned in case they are running short.

I don't think I have had much scrap leftover though because I tend to "stretch" theirs as much as possible it seems. It is a great way to use up your stash scraps too.

Looking forward to this also...ordered some other fabric since I'm short on the possums...so we'll go with one of a couple other choices this time around.

Think I'll get my Dad working on folding and wrapping them up next week...he'll get a blast out of that too.

As a mailing hint...if you use the bigger envelopes (like birthday card size ones) -- If the fold goes across the long edge of the envelope it's considered an envelope -- If the fold goes across the short edge of the envelope it's considered a flat and could cost more to mail.

Because I'm lazy - I make 4 (four)sets of labels of my name and your name --
(swap name, my boardname, real name, mailing address) (swap name, your boardname, real name, mailing address)
-- the swap name and boardname really help in case you are participating in several swaps
The excel sheet April sends out will make this easy if you know how to merge a list into labels.

one set to put on the outgoing fabric (in case the envelope is "eaten")
one set to put on the outgoing envelope,
one set to put on the finished block (again in case the envelope is "eaten")
one set to put on the finished outgoing envelope.

Fraew 08-09-2012 08:59 AM

@ moonwork42029: I'm all in for lazy! Thanks for the tips. :)
