I have a silly question...I have my blocks out and want to make a quilt. how do I put them together? If I add a border do I add it to the side of each block or to the top and bottom? what size strips do you put between them. I have been in 2 swaps and haven't made anything yet since I am not sure of what to do. Thanks for all your help

Elisabrat 08-10-2012 06:44 AM

Marcialee, its up to you goofy. Every quilt tells you (grin) how to do it. You can add a sashing between each of the blocks, kind of like framing them? then you can add a border top and bottom and sides if you like and the best part of it all is its all done right. Lay it on the table, floor whatever and see if you like it all together. Its called auditioning your fabrics? then you can try a piece in between, stand back see if you like how that looks, then try adding another fabric to the sides or top and stand back does it work? sometimes what works in our heads maybe is different from reality. Same with picking your fabrics .. squint.. does the color work? you know I am sure. I have quilts with and without sashing I have done. All of mine have borders but probably just to extend the sizing a bit..and to accent the center blocks. I am sure whatever you chose will be the right thing .. Good luck! Go to the pics here of finished quilts and see what others are chosing and if you like it. Personal kind of thing right everyone?

I wonder if we come up with a chorus line dance/song if we could get more to join? I know if I sing they might join just to shut me up. Ok, here goes... Free Fabric yes there is yes there is! Free fabric yes there is! Full mailboxs and lots of chat, we got free fabric here yes there is! I will keep singing to all the lookie loues who have not signed up. This song is for you.. we love you truuuuuly truuuuly, join the gang and have some fun.. we love you... (are they signing up yet?) DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU. Chickens.. (not sure that is the right approach).. um.. please? pretty pleeeeze?

Elisabrat 08-10-2012 06:45 AM

Last ditch effort, FREE KITTENS! I have kittens! Cute little tiny six week old tigers who want you... sign up today for your boom swap and receive one free little bundle of love.

wendiq 08-10-2012 07:30 AM

My fabric is cut and in envelopes, waiting for my list. I'm ready to go! :) I'm looking forward to this swap.....Love seeing the completed tops that were made from past swaps. Some lovely blocks were made.....I am always amazed how the appearance of a block becomes so different with different fabrics. Can you tell I'm anxious to begin????

nygal 08-10-2012 07:44 AM

Where do you buy envelopes for the fq's? Does Staples have them? I usually only buy business size envelopes so I was wondering where everyone buys their envelopes.

buddy'smom 08-10-2012 07:45 AM

Yes you can get them at staples. I have mine cut but thats as far as I've gotten so far.

LovingIzabella 08-10-2012 08:28 AM

Well Elisabrat you bribe them with free fabric, singing and furbabies and I will offer free chocolate. What quilter can resist chocolate?? I will share with everyone from my super secret stash :)
As of right now I need 7 (possibly 6 waiting on a size confirm) to make one large group AND I have 3 full small groups and need 7 to make a fourth full.
I am going to post the names of all those interested here. If you do not see your name please let me know so we can add you to the list.

Sorry that should read:
As of right now I need 6 (possibly 5 waiting on a size confirm) to make one large group AND I have 3 full small groups and need 6 to make a fourth full.

And this is the correct list sorry about that!

Oh good I can stop singing. On another note: Ever iron your elbow? I advise you not to. Sitting at my sewing machine yesterday I turned to iron a piece and apparently had let it turned TOWARDS me not away. news flash: it sucks. Amazing how often we lean on our elbows and never notice til you do something like.. iron it to realize how lovely they are without blisters. sigh.. ah the stupid things we do.

note again: even dumber. going to be 100 today here in my lovely neck of the woods. no humidity. Who needs it? besides I decided at 7 a.m. to put a pork roast in the oven for shredded bbq. It only takes.. 5-6 hours to cook slowly. WHAT THE HECK WAS going on with my thought process. Shoot, not the word I was thinking.. its hotter than heck inside now and only 1-2 more hours. What a good idea NOT that was.

kittens, kittens.. chocolate with the kittens and fabric too.. come on you can chose either or even! but the fabric is manditory. Bummer I know.

I've had good luck using my crock pot for that. I get it all set up the night before (usually the meat is frozen) and then I keep it in the fridge overnight. I start it on the way out the door in the morning on low and by dinner time it's ready to get shredded & eaten.

moonwork42029 08-10-2012 10:57 AM

I've actually sat my crockpot outside on the weekends so it doesn't heat up the kitchen either....set it on a TV tray so the critters don't check it out. If I want really tender meat for shredding, I cook it all night and then put it in frig the next morning so I can shred it whenever I want.

If you squeeze and iron your fabric down tightly, I've received fat eights in the regular size envelopes...regular business size ones work great too. The self stick saran wrap works wonders to help keep it squished tight. Again, I'm so lazy, I use the bigger envelopes so I don't have to work so hard to get them squished.

Yosamitesa 08-10-2012 11:00 AM

WOO HOO!!! I made the list...I'm at the bottom, but heck...I made the list!!!! :D

Elisabrat 08-10-2012 11:48 AM

I went with bigger too cause well .. I did. Grocery store sold them here. said and done maybe .16c each? not horrible. also I never use regular sized ones. Greeting cards or manila.

kensington 08-10-2012 12:32 PM

I buy the generic zip lock bags, and then get the mailing envelopes from the $1 store for shipping. I put one of my address labels on each one so they know who sent it, and I hope they can use it again to put my block in to send it back to me.

I won't use a letter envelope, not taking that kind of chance with my fabric or someone's block.

kensington 08-10-2012 12:43 PM

I was wondering though... and of course I don't know anything about hosting any of these things. But, what if you changed the Large to a 30 and keep the small a 15, and then if someone wanted a large... 30 or two smalls, they could be either or. If somone wanted 2 large, they could actually work with four 15's and of course the 15's could be just fifteen or you could switch them around to make them work?? Feel free to dismiss this if it isn't helpful or making sense... ROTFLOL> LOL> LOL> LOL

Someone posted back that they use them.

charlottemarie 08-10-2012 04:30 PM

Just a thought, I use envelopes from Walmart, they are labeled Social Envelopes. They come white, in a box of 50 and they have adhesive so no bad taste on your tongue. They are very reasonably priced and they are perfect.

I rarely shop at Wal Mart, but I may check that out. Thanks

I did the boom with a set of 39 .. First boom !what an experience. I so enjoyed , I will do it again. 4 months turn around is one third of a year, thinking about it everyday for one third of the year. My response to your suggestion of 4 groups of 15 or 2 groups of 30 at one time, maybe you, however I can not imagine having 3 or 4 spreadsheets at one time to work with.. and all the mail to be delivered into my mailbox, mailing out correctly, the postage fees, were about $48.00 and making all those blocks on time and it oh it would drive my postman to change routes. I am in for 15 this time. I am looking forward to it.

buddy'smom 08-11-2012 06:37 AM

I agree, they get ripped open all the time. I use the 5 by 7, this way I feel safe in sending them.

jaba 08-11-2012 03:16 PM

Elisabrat, mine are stuffed and ready to address. Just a suggestion to everyone... label your envelope some way so it says Boom 8 and then then group you're assigned to. So many of us are in the FQ and F8 swaps and 2 of these that it will make it so much easier to be able to go right to the spreadsheet. PLease?????

nygal 08-11-2012 03:20 PM

Mine are in zip lock bags and labeled..just waiting to put them in the mailing envelopes until I get the names.
