I am thinking about signing up for this. Here is a "funky" house block I was playing with this morning, using lots of scraps. It measures 6 1/2" x 12 1/2". But don't sign me up yet. I want to make sure I can fulfill the committment. Is my block acceptable if I decide to join?

This is how it would look, but just doing "regular" funky houses would be no big deal.

Crafty3790 01-16-2012 07:02 PM

I like it it's cute.

Annaquilts 01-16-2012 11:40 PM

I just finnished three 12 in. funky house blocks and think yours are awesome and would go right with it. I hope you join.

Crafty3790 01-18-2012 06:04 PM

We're up to 17 one from Germany. If you want to see the list it's on my blog.

Annaquilts 01-18-2012 11:08 PM

I am off to Road to California Quilter's convention tomorrow but I did start another set of three funky house blocks. I am planning to read up on Gwen Marston Liberated Quiltmaking (the first book) http://gwenmarston.com/index.htm to get some further tips. I love the funky houses posted by rwquilts.

Muse&Sew 01-19-2012 07:43 AM

Are we supposed to put borders on these blocks? Confused about this when reading some of the posts.

Crafty3790 01-19-2012 08:04 AM

Just make a block anyway you want. The one that's quilted is one Dotty made and I wanted to show it for inspiration. If you notice rw doesn't have a border on hers. If you want it to have a border then you can. Hope that makes sense.

Judith1005 01-19-2012 10:47 AM

I was very interested on how that question was going to be answered. A lot of people don't need borders. Because the seam to be able to have their finished block the correct size. I have a hugh problem with my blocks coming out the correct size. So a lot of times I have to use borders to even things out. I know, I'm practing on the cutting and 1/4 inch seams. I'm pretty sure that's where my problem is. Thank goodness these are wonky. Went on a shop hop yesterday and will finish it up tomorrow. Have seen lots of inspirational regular houses. Will start constructing mine this weekend.

Hey Judith 1005, a tip that I learned from a book from Mary Sue Collins who does minatures a lot, is that when you cut be sure to put the line on the full side of the fabric and not to edge, that sliver can make or break an accurate block, especially in minatures. You can tell on an Omni Grid ruler, the yellow lines and black lines for measuring. Try on a yellow line setting the full yellow on the side of the main piece of fabric and then cut. This does help. I also watched this on the old H&G quilt show with Alex Anderson.

Judith1005 01-19-2012 05:56 PM

Thank you. I will definitely try that. And this weekend I will go to the web site and see if the video is on there. What great tips I get from everyone here.

I've made 3 3inch bird houses and one 9 inch lighthouse so far. Are they all okay?

Crafty3790 01-21-2012 01:29 PM

There great I love them.

Judith1005 01-21-2012 01:52 PM

Those are awesome. I love them both.

Krisb 01-21-2012 06:44 PM

Anyhow, I'm in and will post some blocks as soon as I get some done.

Crafty3790 01-22-2012 03:30 PM

Great look forward to seeing them.

Lv2sew2011 01-22-2012 07:48 PM

You got my vote to include embroidery too!

kiffie2413 01-23-2012 05:22 PM

Hi,
Well, I told myself I was going to finish a lot of my other things before I join anything else...but, I have been wanting to make a house quilt for a while...So, count me in!! I love the outhouse idea...I also have a quilt I made, a sampler that includes an old time red schoolhouse, I put a cobblestone roof on it, would 1 block like that be ok? I can post a pic of it if anyone isn't sure... I also am fine with embroidery/applique, and a doghouse, too...I love the quilt shop idea! I would like to kind of make mine into an around the neighborhood quilt...wonky or not! :)
Can't wait to see all the blocks!!
Kif

Crafty3790 01-23-2012 06:03 PM

We love pictures. I got some great house block patterns in a book I'm looking forward to doing them.

travelinggramma 01-24-2012 06:51 AM

I love the idea of a neighborhood quilt - with an outhouse and lighthouse and stores! Sifting through my patterns and will come up with something so put me down too! Embroidery is ok - but I am more of traditional rather than funky/wonky

Crafty3790 01-24-2012 07:14 AM

Great to have you and I will mark down your preferences.

I am getting confused! Are we doing 'funky' as in bright colors and fanciful or are we doing a regular town kind of thing?

Difergie 01-24-2012 07:35 AM

Love these!

FYI
These are some great blocks, but most of them are 10 inch blocks so they will have to be modified for our 3,6, 9, 12, inch block sizes.

Yeah, I'm confused too. We're talking apples and oranges here. I wouldn't want to mix a contemporary "funky" with a country-styled schoolhouse.

rwquilts 01-24-2012 02:05 PM

The houses I made are wonky, which fits with funky, but not with a traditional neighborhood or houses. I maybe am not in the right swap? I've only made 3 and love them so won't mind keeping them. The title of the swap didn't say traditional to me, which is why I made crazy houses. I promise my feelers won't get hurt if it should be more traditional!

Crafty3790 01-24-2012 03:31 PM

Most are doing funky there are enough in the swap that I can fulfill both. Most have said they want either. I marked who don't want funky so make what you want and have fun. I have kept track of who wants what so you will get what your heart desires.
