I love Burns, although I have to read slow to understand him sometimes. In honor choir in High School I sang an arrangement of "My Luve's Like a Red, Red, Rose", so that's my favorite.
For anyone who wants to hear it, I managed to find it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DItn6unqCZ4

Well today is Burns Night which celebrates the life and works of Robert (Rabbie) Burns - the Bard (poet) of Scotland. 25th January was his birthday (b.1759) and this is traditionally celebrated in Scotland with a Burns Supper, usually formal, when the poem 'To a Haggis', amongst others, is read.
Many of you will be familiar with 'Auld Lang Syne' sung at New Year. This is another of his many poems, about winter, I thought you might like; Winter: A Dirge (1781) The wintry west extends his blast, And hail and rain does blaw; Or the stormy north sends driving forth The blinding sleet and snaw: While, tumbling brown, the burn comes down, And roars frae bank to brae; And bird and beast in covert rest, And pass the heartless day. "The sweeping blast, the sky o'ercast," The joyless winter day Let others fear, to me more dear Than all the pride of May: The tempest's howl, it soothes my soul, My griefs it seems to join; The leafless trees my fancy please, Their fate resembles mine! Thou Power Supreme, whose mighty scheme These woes of mine fulfil, Here firm I rest; they must be best, Because they are Thy will! Then all I want-O do Thou grant This one request of mine!- Since to enjoy Thou dost deny, Assist me to resign. |

Thank you Kathleen. This might be my last month on here as I'm a bit fed up. Neither of my December parcels arrived, although one SP has emailed a few times saying she's going to post it......
Still waiting on one from this month too. |
Knitette you never received a package at all?
Or the ones you mailed never made it, sorry confused. |

However, my January SP emailed to say sorry for it being posted late and Lori tells me it was posted on the 23rd (see also post #770 on this thread). Thank you for your kind offer quiltingdragon your thoughtfulness means a lot - much more than any parcel. 'A misty morning may become a clear day' (Scottish proverb) |
Just to clarify - please, please don't send any parcels or gifts (unless you get me in Feb, lol) - your thoughts are more than enough!

K, what a beautiful gift!! I'll bet you can't quit smiling, which I am sure was the intention!
Knitette, From the US I don't believe it is that much more expensive, if you check out the prices. I had to go on line and sign up, cause the post office was less than helpful. The program I found worked very good, but I thought I signed up for a USPS service and it was not. And they charge $15 a month. I don't think I will use it enough to pay that, I do not recall seeing that information as I signed up, but I was getting antsy about the mailing. The pay one price envelope turned out to be almost double what first class was. Moral of the story, follow the instructions and get your international package out early. My first didn't, but my next one will!! I always seem to be behind. When I was young, I was ALWAYS early for everything. I must be taking all that time back. LOL While I love to swap with everyone, US and abroad, it is great getting to know someone from other parts of this great country, but the international flair REALLY sets it off!! I hope all our international friends will bear with us "less than perfect" humans, and us "less than perfect" humans strive to be better!! LOL And to those, and I know they are FEW, that sign up just to get a package and never send one out, SHAME ON YOU!!! I hope our hard working swap hosts track and share these individuals so they don't get away with it more than once!! Whoo, that was a tall soap box. |
Knitette I'm so sorrry that happened to you! Don't understand why people sign up and then don't follow through! As one of those who has received from you we would greatly miss you and all those wonderful things from Scotland! Hoping you receive a pkg this week!

Well I don't know how she did it, but my package from buslady, posted on the 22nd (tsk! tsk!) arrived in six days which included the weekend! I love everything. In fact Onalee got me everything I asked for. I've told her I'm going to divorce DH and marry her, lol. Thank you.
With regard to the two from December, I think what you folks say is, 'I'm over it' :) |
Nice package Knitette, you're going to love the Havel seam ripper. I've had mine for about 1 1/2 yrs. and it's the only one I use. Very sharp though and it can cut a hole in your fabric real easy, ask me how I know? I want to get another one for sewing upstairs. The blades last forever but let me know if you can't find them in Scotland, I ordered a box of them and would be glad to share.
