Now I am really confused. You have a d4p for end of January sign-up as batik and solid black. You also have valentine d4p with a twist sign-up for January 30th. Do we just pick which one we would like to do or do we do both...if we sign up. Thanks
December is blacks/whites/brights and is due 1/20 January is Batiks and is due 2/28 February is Valentines and is due 3/30 Anything else - - - -let me know! Jane |

Looks like we are all getting out blocks finished. Here are my sets - made correctly this time.
The previous sets I made will now serve as a border round for top made from a previous swap that was also Black/White/Bright, though all different blocks. Jane |
Stitch124, Definitely chain piecing is the way to go. I think doing one step over and over is the fastest. I did 3 sets one day, then 2 sets another day (30's swap). I sewed all, ironed all, then cut all, etc. With the batiks, I did the 4-patch for all 6 sets one day. But one batik I didn't like, so I ordered a different fabric. Now I have it, so I will do the 4-patch, then chain piece all the sets, etc. I don't think it matters what you rotate-- just make it so that your end layout is correct.

Hi -- I did some chain piecing last night for my December blocks and it did seem to move along faster. I also decided to follow the instructions on Jane's first message just to be sure I am following the correct format. Thinking I will recut some b/w and w/b squares and remake some blocks using a very scant 1/4" seam as my blocks are coming out shy by about 1/8" <DARN>
Thanks for your input givio! As always -- your advice is very very helpful. Have a great day. Julie |
After reading your post yesterday stitch124 I flipped a set the way you described and it came out the same way. Had never timed myself to see how long it actually took me to make a set of 6 plus 1 for myself. I already had the blocks of batiks and blacks cut out into the squares. Clock set: sewed each set together by two's, resew into a 4 patch, iron, make the inch cuts, resew all again, iron, check size and stack. 1 hour and 14 minutes. I did chain piece every step for all 7. about 10 1/2 minutes per block. Then I had 3 left to do on another set and just made those blocks individually and it took much longer doing them one by one, about 14 minutes each. So for me chain piecing is way faster. The pattern for the Valentine one's are going to take longer I'm sure with the way it's cut. I'll have to find another routine to speed it up.

Oh pretty! Especially like that b/w fabric duo on the completed set.
Love seeing all the different combinations everyone is coming up with. I never ceases to amaze me how we have very few if any duplications of the b/w fabrics even though there are so many of us. |

Hi all --
Just a note to share the two sets of blocks that are going into the mail today. Wishing I could contribute more, but not enough hours in the day. Now to get busy on the Batiks and Valentines blocks. Committed to 2 sets each but I will try to do more if time allows. Julie |
Very pretty tubsfam and Stitch124

Wow- those are lovely

those look great.
lol, I overbought (darn!) I forgot that I am only doing 4 sets now. ha ha, will have to make more for myself. Patti |
UGH!!!!! the sets are all messed up, not sure if it is the pressing with steam and fabric shrunk or what. it is off by as much as 1/8 inch. so having to remake 2 sets. I have the other 3 sets cut apart, ready for the chain piecing. I always use steam when pressing, I think I am going to turn the steam off for the remaining ones I need to make and see what happens.
|
createfourpaws -if you cut your starting squares at 5" you need to use a "scant" 1/4" seam to make these come out right.
I have found that if I cut my starting blocks at 5 1/4" then when I am finished sewing and pressing (with steam) I can trim up to square. I have not mastered the "scant" 1/4" seam so the above works for me. |

omg! Jan 20th. Where has my head been????
I will have to bow out as it will take longer to get there than that from here -and I don't want to hold anyone up. I am sorry Jane. =(( I am all mixed up with the dates and can't believe that it is the 13th already!!!. I should have had these out last weekend. I have no idea what I have been doing. I had more time in my head. Short of driving there myself, they won't make it on time. ARRRGGHH, I am sooooo sorry. Looks like I will make mine up with what I have for my sets. oh, I was so looking forward to this. I knew I should have done them over the holidays, but we had so much ice and sickiness here, I couldn't get to the quilt store. I apologize to everyone, Patti

I will be sending out priority mail so you may not have them until the 21st Jane, let me know if that will be a problem. Thanks |
Mine won't go out until Saturday either,I'm just starting to get better from a very serious ear infection. Will do my best.
|
ok, I'm not getting this. Went to post office and got the envelope but was told I don't pay until I send it. If this is right ,that means your putting out the money to mail back to me.I don't think thats right.Let me know what to do.
|
either send the cash or have them put regular stamps on the envelop
|
My blocks are in the mail, expected delivery is today, Friday the 17th. I was just reading the posts on the Batik swap and saw that you want each block marked with our name not just the baggie. I did not understand that and only marked the baggie. I am so sorry for the extra work I will cause you!
|
OMG ....I have 3 days to get 4 more sets done. I have been busy rearranging my bedroom that I have not set at my sewing machine in 2 days. Guess I will do that today.
|
Jane -- you should be receiving my b/w, w/b w/brights blocks today. USPS said the package is out for delivery. I will not be able to participate in the swaps for Jan/Feb/April/May -- have too many irons in the fire right now. Looking forward to receiving the return blocks. I've been trading additional 30's charms with givio and will have enough blocks to make a king size quilt. Taking a long arm class in March and hope to rent the LA at the shop to quilt my own quilt. I will think about swapping again in March for the patriotic squares. Will see how my priorities land. Thank you for hosting the swap -- you are a wonderful swap hostest and you're in my contacts on the phone so I have your address handy for the next swap!
|
i have 4 sets completed, working on the other 2. May only be able to send the 4 sets as I am fighting a stomach bug, so hard to sit and sew when running to the ..... . Ok TMI. I am hoping to get the others done. THey will be in the mail tomorrow. I have put the labels on the back of the blocks.

As I mentioned in my previous post, since the 20th falls on a holiday, it will effect the mail. Please send your packages anyway. Let's have a really good participation. As a result and because of my work schedule, I probably won't swap everything out til closer to the end of the week anyway. So please send your blocks!!
C'mon team! You can do it!!! Rah Rah Rah ((okay. I'm setting down my pom poms now)) Jane |
have 4 sets done and 2 sets sewn into 4 patch. Will cut and re sew tomorrow. I use the USPS site and buy my postage/Label so I will be able to get them in the mail Monday.

Hi ladies, I'm itching to start laying out my blocks for this swap. I'm hoping you can give me some ideas. I've laid out my blocks so far but it looks way too *busy for my taste. Would sashings looks better to organize the chaos of all these blocks. What colors would look good? White or bright with white and black cornerstones? I'm seriously color challenged when it comes to design.
I would appreciate you thoughts. Kindly,Julie |
Stitch124 - Sashing will help to "calm" the top. I would recommend using either solid black or solid white for the entire sashing to give it the look you are going for.
