I like shopping the fat quarter bundles, but I'm just worried that I'll stock up on them, and then I won't be able to use them for the one patterns I want, and I'll end up needing more, lol.

It's an endless cycle, isn't it?

Elisabrat 11-20-2012 06:41 PM

I totally agree on the black matching super hard to do. I like 2 or 3 yrd of black. Red well heck all the colors you can come close but its like buying yarn you buy it all from the same dye lot or when you stitch it together it shows. I can ALWAYS find a good use for a fat quarter and give me a matching set, oh dear that would be wonderful. I would say most of my fabric is f8 or f4 as its all I can get at any given time or what is gifted tome. I do not complain I love fabric (swoon?)

marytoddliz 11-20-2012 08:37 PM

You know it is funny but I have very little red in my stash, I am not sure why but I only buy red when I am using it. My
Stash is filled with brights, I love bright colors and it seems that I can't pass them up!

I am collecting B&W right now so I buy any FQ with any combination of black and white. I think I have enough now to make a scrappy quilt, now I just need a pattern I like.

Elisabrat 11-21-2012 03:49 AM

Marybeth, just white/black or one accent color too? I found in the boom that a tiny bit of one accent, it was usually red wasnt it? was really eye catching. a bright blue would also be cool. Have you checked out e-patternscentral.com? lots to pick from there. I just found two I loved checking out quilts on pinterest and ordered from there. I love scrappy too. I am scared of too much white. My dh is not the most fastidious of men. He tends to spill things, not notice that grease on the side of his hand, muddy boot type. I love him dearly, those things.. not so much :) so no white oh heck no! splattered paint cloth might work save me some. really splattered.

I've been thinking about using this block as the basis for applique for this swap .... just not sure yet. Lots of ideas floating through my head .....

It has quite a story .... I found it about a month ago at a Salvation Army thrift store in a bag of rags ... and I just could not leave it there. It was super dirty so I soaked it in mild soapy water and then vinegar water and dried it in the sun. It is all hand stitched and hand quilted, muslin backing and batting, and measures 14" by 15". It looks to be about 30 years old. I thought it might be a great background for flowery applique.

But then by the time I get it done I might not be able to part with it.

JuneBillie 11-22-2012 12:23 PM

MaryMo that is so pretty, and the story behind it makes it even more special.

Elisabrat 11-24-2012 12:29 PM

Mary Mo I love that block. I am a big sucker for gingham look I would say that would make such a pretty table cloth with some length added it could be so adorable.. on my table even. Of course after all that work spills would really irk me so maybe a wall hanging.. for me! oops for someone!

I have so many easter fabrics now that my secret pal sent me I am beyond happy with what will turn out with the fabrics. They all FIT. of course if I use all of them it might be more like a jumbo wall hanging oversized lap quilt :) so maybe just a bit of each. The pinks, blues, ginghams and bunnies and eggs and now to find a soft yellow and maybe some little blue birds or chickies oh chickies! and it will be a home run. Might need to beg to have me as my partner. I wonder does begging work? like if it included bribes too? curiosity makes me ask :)

Rhonda 11-24-2012 11:52 PM

Hey don't forget all the quilt blocks I designed and put on here for free! LOL NOT that I am urging you to use my stuff but it would be really neat to see someone use them in a unique way! Aaah heck yes I am too urging you to consider my quilt block designs!! LOL But no you don't have to use anything but what you want to use!! Use what ever speaks to you from here or any other source you find.

Rhonda, I would *love* to attempt to use your blocks! (I say attempt, because I might botch them beyond recognition!)

I should probably get to planning for this, btw.... hmmm..... spring... wallhanging... I think I need to go shopping. :)

Rhonda 11-25-2012 09:53 AM

If you need a link to find the directions for using my shortcut block methods which are used to make my quilt blocks just let me know

So can I "officially" add you to the list of players now???? Hmmmmm??? LOL Gotcha hooked! :D

Lynnie25 11-25-2012 12:00 PM

Oh my goodness Ronda, I didn't know you had an album of all those blocks. I have found 2 or 3 I would love to do.

But I am thinking for my wallhanging I am going to use a large floral print - have never tried to put a large print fabric into a smaller wallhanging before without cutting into it too much.

Rhonda 11-25-2012 12:27 PM

A couple of years ago I did a Sampler Quilt along posting 3 quilt blocks every week for 28 weeks. Then I did a Second Sampler and posted one quilt block a week for not sure how long! LOL Can't remember. But until I did these albums I didn't have any place you could see them all in one place.

Here is the link for the User section where all of my Sampler threads are posted. You can see the original directions there.

Elisabrat 11-25-2012 09:36 PM

but Rhonda the real question is...

DO you EVER sleep? like ever? and how about a album for us less than grand quilters: EASY AS 1-2 (heck with three) blocks by Rhonda. Cut strip. Sew strip. block complete? I need a copy of that album so I can move on to your other things. How long have you been quilting? I think for a long long time :) uh for someone so young that is.

Rhonda 11-25-2012 09:56 PM

I have done some simpler quilt blocks. I'll have to get them together for you. I started quilting 30 years ago but didn't get into any minis until about 18 years ago and have been designing since I got my EQ5 in 2006. I have tons of designs that have never seen the light of day yet. I love love love to play with my EQ5

I like this one, but with something else other than the cats... (I'm a dog person, myself...)

Rhonda 11-28-2012 03:57 PM

That's a cute idea Josie! I love spring flowers

Elisabrat 11-28-2012 07:16 PM

I really like that one too then I had to really look WHAT CATS? lol finally I saw them. Ah these old eyes.. the upside I don't see wrinkles very well either even with the reader glasses on. You all look so very young to me!

I have the fabrics but not the pattern. I am not so much into applique love the look but would love to learn needle turn. For now I will just ..create I guess. I was thinking something in an egg shape center then crazy quilting around it til its square.. but only easter fabrics.. or perhaps a faberge type egg I know applique but wouldnt that be oh so pretty? my bunnies are very cute.. perhaps peaking over a fence? then of course something traditional say four blocks reverse colors in each one..

JuneBillie 11-29-2012 11:13 PM

That pattern for the spring flowers is pretty, and the other ideas sound very interesting. I am waiting to see other fabric I might get for Christmas, because my daughter in law was asking things I like. Guess what I said????

Elisabrat 11-30-2012 01:01 AM

Junebillie one can never go wrong with fabric .. I will hope she took any hints you tossed out. fabric fabric fabric :) Junebillie what are you gearing for colorwise? mine are between pastel and medium tones so far. Not sure if I want to add a bit of bold splash to it such as turquoise or bright pink.. the grass is a true green so that is as deep as I think i want to go.. sure hope it will make someone smile. I love the colors and fabrics. :)

MaryMo 11-30-2012 05:45 PM

Spring flowers are a great idea! I'm looking for other spring ideas for applique ....

Love love love it QM! That is fabulous! anyone who gets it will be in heaven

MaryMo 12-04-2012 01:10 PM

awesome idea, QuilterMomma! You do superb embroidery!

JuneBillie 12-04-2012 09:52 PM

QM that is mine isn't it????? It is so pretty.

Elisabrat, your color thoughts sound great, and I don't know yet until I see after Christmas, lol.

Rhonda, I have planned for awhile now to use at least one of yours. I can't wait. I am still searching for my little measuring thingy.

We really have a list going. That is great!

Rhonda 12-04-2012 10:03 PM

I am so pleased with all the contributions you all make to this swap!! You all make it a fun place to be! Love seeing pictures!

Elisabrat 12-05-2012 07:40 AM

That little quilt would look GREAT on my sewing room wall. I think you could even send it early if you like! Very pretty with all your vintage fabrics.

I still have a tiny bit of other stuff to finish before I can get on this. here is a question: would you rather prefer a small quilt with say four or six 'quilty blocks' or would you prefer say something like the flower quilt that was posted earlier with say an applique? what do you like to do? I have more fun I think with quilting blocks than applique because I am NOT good with applique. One day I want to learn to needle turn but not on your project.. quite yet!

QuilterMomma 12-05-2012 09:07 AM

Needle turn is pretty, but I am like you not real good at it. I enjoy the fusible applique or the machine applique. I have gotten even to where I do the fusible then stitch it down with the longarm so i do not have to work so hard on ether and it looks real good because on the backside of the quilt it shows off all the applique pieces and then I can really quilt on te applique and no one is the wiser. Yep, killing two birds with one stone. Important note on that, must be sure to use a quality fusible. Also, doing it Whigrose's way of donut hole (cuttng out the centers before putting on fabric) really makes the appliques soft and they look so close to needle turn. Whigrose's work is so pretty.

Elisabrat 12-05-2012 08:59 PM

I did see that cut the center part out in a maybe fons and porter magazine in the last few months. I buy steam a seam? usually in the packages from Jo anns. Thanks for the post Quiltermomma I thought maybe I was the only one who had trouble with it.

I wanted to mention if your interested check out the boom group Ruby there is a post one of the last ones of a block someone did using the fractured method. 169 pieces for one block. And it is terrific. I was just so amazed Iwanted to share that. go peak honest its a good thing!

ScrapQuilter 12-07-2012 10:55 PM

Well I have my wall hanging done - now if I could just remember how to post a picture here.......... have trouble doing that since they changed the site.
LOL.............

Elisabrat 12-08-2012 05:56 AM

Question are we to post our pictures of finished items before they are received or are we to post tiny corners of what we are doing instead? like teases/ curiosity and all. what say you everyone? and did anyone go check out that fractured quilt in the boom yet? I am still amazed.

MaryMo 12-08-2012 07:13 AM

I explored that fractured quilt .... if only I could do that! It looks difficult ..... for someone with more experience than me. I'm still working on my design ... teaser pictures to follow.

Elisabrat 12-12-2012 01:08 PM

WOW you started it? I pulled fabric. That wore me out so I am taking a break. uh like a one more week break as I have to finish a quilt I started. Mystery train, finished the back piecing today as I had not enough fabric to do the whole thing and now to pin it and machine quilt it. I have a brother csi6000 so its not a big machine. One row at a time. and smoooshing it into that small window is no easy task. I think gee I ironed this thing together before I got to the quilting only to smooooooooosh it into 1/10 the size it was ..was there thinking involved here? no choice. I dream of your long arm quilt machines. ok I only sorta do. I fantasize about sitting in a chair with a cup of hot tea watching you use that long arm machine on my quilt. I love making tops. I hate quilting. (horrid thing to admit)

Pictures of your progress or teases or the whole quilt are great! However you want to do it is fine. We love pictures of any kind!!
