The paper should remain on your blocks unless you do a row of stay stitching about 1/8in around the outside of the block.
I would like to know if it is ok to do iron-on applique with button-hole stitches around the outside edge of the applique?

I have googled pieced santa blocks, also look in old Christmas Quilt magazines. I have found a few.
