Thank you everyone, for your thoughts and prayers. Your friendships mean so much to me. I am humbled by and grateful for your support and concern. Papa and I got home very late last night. We are four hours from our son's regular heart doctor/hospital and that is where we took him yesterday. His doctor "just happened" to be on call and was able to see him with no delay! (I don't believe in coincidences!)
Mike is still in the PICU, he has double pneumonia. His Ped. Cardiologist did an echocardiogram and found that his aortic valve that was replaced in 2010 is failing so he is getting a lot of "backsplash" and his heart is having to work overtime with the result being that he is still not getting enough oxygen.
Before they can replace this valve he has to recover from the pneumonia and be well for at least four to six weeks. Looks like a lot of hospital time over the upcoming holiday's for us! He will probably be in the PICU for a week this time and then sent home to recuperate.
I never thought I would say that I am glad that one of my children has pneumonia, but if he hadn't come down with it we might not have found out about his valve. He had a check up in February and was given a clean bill of health. He wasn't supposed to see his cardiologist for a year.
At 18, even with 5 prior heart surgeries, this kid thinks he is six foot tall and bulletproof. (He is Vietnamese and small......he feels he has a lot to prove.) It is a real challenge to keep him from lifting too much weight, or pushing his body beyond it's capabilities. Chronologically he is 18, with this syndrome he will probably always operate at about a 12 year old level. It doesn't seem like many years difference, but maturity wise it is.
I am so so so very tired. We came home to get everything we need and to decide who goes back for the week. With five kids left at home, I came back home to keep things here running smoothly. I will stay with him when he has his heart surgery and DH will keep the home fires burning then.
I just wanted to let everyone know and to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who wrote to encourage us. Please don't stop praying and sending good thoughts Mike's way.
Here he is in June at their Civil Air Patrol Encampment graduation. My three are the ones sitting behind the fellow in front. My daughter, Ellie, Gabriel and then Michael.
