hi~ Yes, it is okay to do it by machine, as long as it is legible to read and to fit all the info on the block~
if you wanted to, just a suggestion, if you are going to do it by machine, you could get a white, white middle, then off white for the rails. Just a suggestion.

But, I plan on strip piecing them.

I love this swap! I finished my blocks in about 3 hours from beginning to end. I used a jelly roll that had been hanging around. I didn't like the looks of the fabric from the outside but when I got it out and sewed it into my strips I realized how pretty it was! Mine are all done and ready to ship! For once I'm ahead of the game.
