...My dh will probably throttle me when I show him the list you guys generate, lol!!! AND we are taking the convertible, so there really will be little room for fabric, but....
In August we are taking a vacation from Central Virginia, and this is the tentative route. We will not be staying long anywhere, but I need to know if there is anything I CAN'T miss!!!
Virginia----Louisville, KY----St Louis, MO---Manhattan, KS,---Boulder, CO---Rocky Mountain NP to Granby, CO---(possibly off to SLC?)---Yellowstone NP, ---Billings, MT---Rapid City---Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse---Dyersville, IA--Chicago---home...
Yeah, that's a LOT of driving. I need to find a hand project, lol.....
But, if anyone knows of places that are superb and shouldn't be missed, I would appreciate it!!

If you are going to stay in West Yellowstone, I have a couple of recommendations. First, get a room early. They fill up fast. If you like theatre at all, go see a production at the Playmill Theatre. It is a very small theatre so you almost feel like you are on the stage with the actors. Really fun & we try to go every year. Go to the Grizzly Bear & Wolf Discovery Center. You don't see many bears or wolves in the wild any more and this is a great chance to see them close up.
Will you stay on I-94 to go from Billings to Rapid City or will you go on I-90 through Wyoming? If you stay on I-94, you will drive right by my house just 100 miles east of Billings. PM me if you are coming this way.

We try to visit with a few friends when we travel but unfortunately we are so pushed for time that we mostly 'wave' and keep moving, so don't be offended if I don't take you up on that offer!!! I do have to hook up with a non quilting friend in Billings, so I know we are going there...
don't think we have time for theater.... I will be the one saying, honey, stop!! I have to take a photo!!!!

I will not be offended if you don't stop. But if you need a potty break . . .
The 2 shops I would recommend in Billings are FiberWorks and Backdoor Quilt Shop. Fiberworks has fabulous samples and tons of fabric. The owner is nationally known. But they can be a bit snobby. Backdoor Quilts isn't quite as fancy, but they are very friendly and helpful.
Have a great trip and let us know how it went after you get home!

Great trip planned-a quickie view of YP on your own is frustrating impossible....take a tour bus It covers the entire park with a quide giving you the hi-lites. I worked there 8 summers, & the wide openness is breaath taking. If you are in the park on Aug.25, you will celebrate Christmas...even Santa

A hidden treasure in Kansas City MO is the Steamboat Arabia Museum in the RAiver Market area. It is an old steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in the 1800's. A family dug it up and preserved all the things on board including fabric that survived the years of being at the bottom of the river covered in mud. It is a fascinating tale of the 1800's version of "Walmart". The way everything was recovered and restored is the most amazing story ever--if it is still the same as always, there is awonderful surprise at the end of the tour. Everyone nearby should visit that museum sometime.

Wow - I'd be worn out the first 200 miles! LOL. When you go to Rocky Mountain National Park - be sure to stop in Estes Park. I can't think of the name of the shop, but they display (and sale) handmade Amish quilts. What a treat for the eyes! Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
