Hi Everyone: I'm anxious for our retreat. It'll be so fun. If anyone would be interested in making aa few Socks for Soldiers I'll bring the pattern. I think you can get 4 socks out of a yard of Christmas fabric. Our quilt group has been making Socks for Soldiers for the past 3 or 4 years. The socks are turned over to the Oregon point person who is in Salem. She collects the socks around the middle of Sept., they are filled with candy, cookies, gum, etc. and sent to Iraq/Afghanistan for our soldiers. It's a great project.

LOL- Maybe there is one of those mini trampolines there that would work. And maybe a Rope Swing to get out??
The last time I slept on the top bunk was sophomore year in college~too many years ago!

Feathers,
Great idea! I'll throw in some Christmas fabric and do a few stockings for you

I got a couple of friends to help and we made 44 stockings and also 44 of those folding tree napkins for the residents at the assisted living facility where my son works in maintenance. it was a fun project. he took his girlfriend's daughters and they personally delivered each one. it was a neat project and I will be glad to help for our servicemen. Can also bring Christmas fabrics. I haven't made anything for myself for forever. I so much like making to give to others.

Another thought. Do they need stockings made from non Christmas fabrics for those who do not celebrate Christmas? I have lots that would work, if they do

Feathers 05-15-2011 05:22 PM

Lilrain:
In the past we have used Christmas fabric for the socks but if you have something else that would be suitable, go for it. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to make up a few socks. The soldiers will love them. If anyone wants to check out the project info you can google "Operation Santa USMC" and they have all the info, pictures of the socks and other pictures and info.

I have looked at the list of foods, and think maybe a big pot of soup would be good for one of our three nights. I can go to Cash and Carry and get some of their frozen soup, which is very good. it makes a pretty big pot and I can also bring the pot to make it in. Can also get crackers. Since they have waffle irons, is anyone interesed in waffles on one of the morning? I could bring some Bisquik and syrup. let me know on that one.

Lilrain: Soup is one of my comfort foods. Love it. Also, I never met a waffle I didn't love! Thank you.

KarenBarnes 05-16-2011 12:14 PM

Sounds good to me! I'll add it to the list!

cbridges22 05-16-2011 01:55 PM

Love waffles!

sew cornie 05-16-2011 08:31 PM

Sounds like there will be no lack of great food. This is a quilting retreat right???   It's coming up soon!

KarenBarnes 05-17-2011 05:51 AM

I'm gaining weight just thinking about the trip! :) That seems to be how it works for me!

We could have a Quilt Fast day. Quilt as fast as you can and without food

We'd probably get more done this way! No stopping for food and the results of eating, and no food comas! :)

KarenBarnes 05-17-2011 01:02 PM

Here is the update on the bedrooms. (Those of us who can brave the top bunk will need to do so, otherwise you might bring a blow up twin!) The cabin has six bedrooms (sleeps 22+ ) and three full bathrooms. Bedroom #1 on the main floor is a huge master bedroom, has a king size bed, cable TV, and its own bath. Upstairs bedroom #2 has one double bed. Bedroom # 3 sleeps 6 and has two custom-made twin over double bunk beds. Bedroom #4 also sleeps 6 and has two custom made twin over double bunk beds, This large bedroom also has a cable TV with game ports for your video games etc. All three floors at Sea Haven have great Ocean views.
<>
Downstairs are two more bedrooms, one more bathroom, a second full size kitchen &
living room, One bedroom has a king size bed and the other has two twin over twin bunk beds. If you have a large group, lots of couples, or teenagers who must have their own space, Sea Haven has the room you need.
<>
In the great room there are three sofas facing our stone fireplace with a gas insert.

sew cornie 05-17-2011 06:32 PM

Thanks for the info Karen. I was serious about a top-bunk, but if someone else really wants the creakiest one, I guess I'm willing to give that up.

A suggestion for those considering bringing small tables to work on . . . if you have a lamp, you may want to bring that along too. Last fall it worked well to have my small table, but the main lighting was at the dining room table and not real great in the area I was working in. Not complaining at all, but now I know that I'll bring a worklight with this time.

Wine Woman 05-17-2011 07:25 PM

I'm trying to get caught up on all the happenings! Lots of food-yum! Soup and waffles sound wonderful.

Thanks sew cornie for the suggestion on bringing an extra light as well. Good idea.

Thanks Karen for the update on the house and rooms. I couldn't count how many are actually going. Did I miss that somewhere?

Just to make sure I have the right weekend-it is the first weekend in June? June 2-5. Will I be there on the right weekend? :?: :?: :!:

KarenBarnes 05-17-2011 07:57 PM

June 2-5! We have 18! 16 that I know of for Thurs and 18 for Friday and 17 for Saturday. I haven't heard from everyone as to exact days they will be there but most have reported in.

ATTN: PAPER PIECING STUDENTS!

Here is what you will need to bring - which is very little, I am happy to say.

a few pins, but not huge ones
a size 90 needle for your machine
a finger pressing thingy - nice but not mandatory
F8's, FQ's, scraps of fabric

I am assuming there will be a rotary cutter/matt and an iron already there!

The patterns I am bringing are for 6" finished blocks. They are an assortment of flowers, hearts, houses, trees, baskets, etc. etc. You might want to have a solid/near solid piece of fabric backgrounds. i.e. sky, grass, white, off white. (Especially if you plan to make more than one block and want them to coordinate)

The quilt in the pix below is the results from a PP class I taught at my hospital...a pink & white memorial for a co-worker who died from cancer. I think it turned out well considering 95% of the students had never made a quilt! (It was a bit challenging at times, to say the least. LOL) Most of the patterns I will be bringing are the same as in this quilt. BTW, we raffled off the quilt, made $1,000 and donated the $$ to Amer.Cancer Society.

Questions??

pins, sz 90 needle, wooden thingy

Here is a quilt that I made especially to bring with me for the retreat (just the right size for a twin). I wanted to use something that would be warm and comfy so I use minkie on the back - never again.

It is very soft and warm but not what I had hoped for.

Thanks,

Sherryl, that's really pretty! I've never worked with Minkie before . . . curious what the problems are . . . other than the $$cost$$.

I'm planning to bring my plaid houses to work on - started as the BOM, but has diverged into its own unique neighborhood. I'm going to cut out as many blocks as I can ahead of time and piece them there. Also may cut out some FWSQ blocks to bring and maybe a wool project. I'm debating about bringing Boom blocks to show-and-tell. Don't have any other show-and-tell to bring along.

What projects are each of you bringing to work on?

The minkie is very stretchy and when I quilted it on the longarm I had to secure it and in doing so it stretched it, then when I took it off the whole thing was drawn up and the edges didn't want to lay flat without major adjusting.

I am going to bring my Candlequilter Star paper piecing pattern, plus I am bringing a Jenny Beyers pattern that I hope to have all the pieces cut ahead of time. Plus I might bring the Bali Double wedding ring star paper piecing project that I am working on. Plus I might bring one of the IRR III centers that I am working on.

Thanks,

Sherryl, One of the LQS in Vancouver had a lady request fleece on the back of a quilt they brought in for longarm quilting. I think the quilter's first experiece was like yours. She did a couple more and got better with it.

Hi Sherryl:
Your quilt is lovely but I HAVE worked with Minky! I will NEVER work with it again! I made a baby quilt for my grandneice and the minky was on the back. Someone asked what the problems are with working with it....well, for starters, it's so slick I couldn't keep it straight and together with the pieced top to sew it. The blanket ended up with wows, tucks, pleats nd hills and valleys the size of the Grand Canyon. The only thing the blanket had going for it was it was so nice and soft and cuddly but not anything I was very proud of to put my name on. I think I paid something like $15 yard for thge Minky fabric at our LQS which I though was very expensive but worth it for a baby quilt but I would never use it again for anything.

Anxious to see yours at the retreat.

quiltingnonie 05-21-2011 07:44 AM

Candlequilter: Looks like I won't be teaching you how to paper piece!

I think I'm going to bring some quilt tops and see if I can get the backs on them...maybe. Also plan to bring Christmas fabric and do some socks for Soldiers. Maybe finish up a couple UFO's that are hanging. I have attention deficit so have more projects started than I can count.

I have been working on a Hunters Star -so I'm hoping to make a lot more progress on our weekend. I started a very easy flannel for one of my boys that will come with me as well. If I can't take sewing quilts I might bring my new wool pin cushions that I would like to make. Sooooo much to be done!

I'm glad I read about the minky. Your quilt is beautiful! Has anyone put flannel on the back of a batik quilt? I'm shopping for wide flannel-I thought that would be warm and soft for a man. Is there any good websites for flannel?

Cindy, Can't direct you to any websites for wide flannel. But I would like to suggest prewashing the flannel. It shrinks a lot more than our quilting cottons and you could end up with a puckery mess and many tears when it gets laundered.

I had minky fabric for the backing on two baby quilts I made. I prewashed it, and my LA quilter didn't have any problems with it. The quilting design REALLY shows up well on the back.
