and was disappointed! I had dreamed of going there because I had heard it was the largest fabric store in SF, that it had tons and tons of beautiful fabrics, so of course I assumed at least "some" of it would be quilting cottons...
Well, some was, but hardly any, and it was quite pricey. The store is four stories, but quite narrow, so it was hard to maneuver and not comfortable to browse. I decided I'd be much better off at my LQS or Joann's!
It's mostly upholstery and apparel fabric. Saw some batiks that were expensive, some remnants that weren't even cute that were expensive, and that's about it. Lots of buttons, but that wasn't what I wanted.
So a head's up to anyone fabric shopping in SF!

Just went there 3 weeks ago for the first time. I agree with you completely. If you need an evening gown for a special occasion and have a ton on money to spend, this is the store for you. Not for quilters!!!!!

I love Britex in San Francisco! For my home decor projects that is. For a period of about 5 years I made an annual day trip there to select fabric for my next project. Now that I've started quilting I've been wondering if they would have any good fabrics for my quilting projets. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll stick to my LQS & visit Britex the next time I'm changing the decor in my house.

Actually, if you want quilting fabric you need to go to Berkeley or Oakland - The East Bay area is where you'll find quilting fabrics, shops, etc.
If and/or when I move back there, I'm going to start a quiltshop tour business. Pick you up at your hotel and take you to all the shops you can handle.

I was there a few years ago and had the same disappointing experience that you did. I did find a really nice Asian fabric but the price wasn't special, I still have the fabric and have used it for some fabric postcards.

My son who lives in San Francisco, spent the day taking me to quilt shops...one beautiful piece of fabric was priced $7.50 and when we went to cashier, I had misread, it was $75.00, (Italian import)! There are no quilt shops, you have to travel out of SF, but great little fabric stores with great prices and wonderful selections. Berkeley has a great shop, Stonemountain and Daughter, I believe it is called, on Shattuck St., right around the corner from the University, also a discount shop with great prices near the Stonemountain. Britex, yes, narrow 4 story, of course, it is a SF building. Best place to find fabric, NewYork, when son lived there, he would fly me in and take me all over, and included the "Strand" Book store, and scouted all the Quilt books and said, Happy Birthday, fill a cart, it's your's.
