So I would probably work the same way in quilting. Piecing the squares together one row at a time and joining the rows as I completed them. This is just my theory on how to do it, and someone more experienced could probably think of a quicker or easier way to do it.

That is amazing! I saw a picture of a quilt a long, long time ago that was done all with HSTs and they were so tiny that the quilt actually looked like it was a cross stich from afar.
