A friend of mine gave me these quilts to repair for her. I said sure not problem. Until I got them home and really looked at them .They are not going to be used she just wants to keep them together to pass them on to her nieces since she didn't have any children of her own.
I suggested that she have them appraised before I touch them. I am thinking just using the tulle to cover the spots that are gone.
I could make some good money repairing these but it just seems like not screwing them up is more important.
To me anyway I think they are beautiful. They are all hand pieced with tiny stitches and the quilting on them is really small compared to mine.

I am passionate about old quilts so here goes:
From the last pic I don't think an appraisal is worth the money it would cost.
It depends how bad they are. If they have a lot of wear overall I would leave them alone.

Very nice antique quilts but I see your dillema. It will be very hard to find fabric that will blend in with the worn look of the other fabric. I think you may be on the right track of just covering those places with tulle.

But, if they are only going to be on display and the quilting is still strong, maybe they are stable enough. I just don't know that much about this type of work.

I would be interested to hear the outcome.

I think I would just do what I could to keep them from getting worse and not try to patch anything onto them.

I would make as small patches as possible to cover lost areas, and that's all. They shouldn't be used, probably, but sure can be kept for a long time if handled carefully. You're right...too difficult to repair, unless the owner wants you to replace all the missing sections of fabrics.

Her thoughts were to match the fabric as close as possible and cover over the places that are missing. I have some old fabrics so I might could do that. I am really torn.

If she is going to pass them down, I think I would probably just do the best I could to fix them. Only need appraisal if she planned to sell them.
