No patterns, you just make up whatever you like. You can find mugs in most retail stores that carry tableware. The Dollars stores would have inexpensive mugs as well as Tuesday Mornings and other local discount stores.

Great idea! This will make a niffty Christmas gift for my SIL. She is a sweetheart but a bit of a "tea snob".
    Thanks for sharing.

I belong to an online group at Eons and the Quilting group is having a 'mug rug challenge' . Members who want to participate will only have to make one mug rug for a buddy who gives them info on what colors, fabrics etc that they would like their mug rug to be and it has to be completed and mailed by mid December.

I'm going to take the simple way and just mail my partner a photo of my mug so that she can take inspiration from it to create the mug rug for me. Maybe she will do the same. Sign-ups aren't complete yet.

Looking forward to this challenge, sounds like lots of fun

I made a couple - not finished yet. I just saw the pattern for the mugrugs with the pockets for tea, spoons etc.. I am going to make those for Christmas presents!
