This little project has been an exercise in problem solving from day one.

Pattern: Pitter Patter! My LQS owner created the pattern and had it spotlighted last spring with kits. It's for a raw edged applique small lap quilt. It could be hearts on girly fabric. Boots on western fabric. Bones on doggy fabric. I got the pattern and kit for balls on sports fabric.

BUT I wanted it twin sized. And the kit had the fabric I used for the baseballs as strips and the squares behind the baseballs as the actual circles for the baseballs. I wanted it this way so took some figuring - and several trips to get more fabric - to get it done. I had bought the lighter sports fabric for the backing, but ended up using it for an extra border. I'm still not sure it's wide enough, but it's as wide as it's going to get! It will be on a bunk bed.

Fabric: Timeless treasures is the brand. Sport black and Sport Natural were two that I used.

Quilting: A friend quilted it on her long arm. It was a challenge going around the baseballs. She did loops in the borders and meandered everywhere else.

Baseballs: hand embroidered stitching. THe ragging I wanted isn't quite happening yet, but I've gotten good advice from this board and will keepworking on it. That thread is here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144097-1.htm

This is for a grandson's 4th birthday. He was visiting when I had the top laid out on a spare bed. He went in there, lay his cheek against the fabric, grinned and said, "This is COOL, Grammy!" I usually let my daughter pick the fabric for things that go to her family, but ... this is HIS! :) (He's in my avatar from about a year ago. This quilt will replace his monkey quilt on his next birthday.)

    Backing is 108" muslin.

You did a great job with this and I love how you posted about it in sections. The fabric is great and I love how you did the pillowcases too. The best part.... You will not be dissappointed or heart broken because the recipient didn't use it or appreciate it. He has already given his seal of approval and it is sure to get loved to death.

I was expecting the picture of the boy hitting the baseball from the pattern batter up. I was surprised and overjoyed! It's so cute and whimsical. I love his reaction to seeing it. You did good Granny, real good.
